In the "White Privilege" post (see below) I asked you to read about the Jena 6.
Last Friday a noose was found hanging from a tree on the University of Maryland campus. This hate crime may be related to the Jena 6 case. Students, faculty and staff at University of Maryland are outraged and there has been a lot of discussion about how best to respond to the incident. How do you think the campus should respond? Does this incident affect your reaction to Peggy McIntosh's article, "White Privilege"?

When I first heard about this I was shocked. This just goes to show that racism is still alive. And to me it seems like it's getting worst. As a black person I know people are going to think what they think. Does anybody remember MLK speech??You would think that there are other things to worry about then skin color. It upsets me to think that someone would do this knowing all the things thats going on with Jena 6. I just hope people realize that it hurts people of color and noncolor to see this. Hopefully things will settle down after the trial..HOPEFULLY
I’m glad Jena 6 is getting national attention. If we are not aware that hate crimes still exist, we stay blind to the rippling negative effects it causes the human race as a whole. My granddaughter, who is in the sixth grade, just started a Catholic private school for the first time. I asked her, “How’s school going”? Her reply, “Not well, I tried to make friends by asking them if they wanted to join me in a “peace & love campaign”, and they teased me”. It saddens me that there is rejection for wanting to promote love and peace. I was married in a very large devout Catholic family were there were tolerated racist remarks. Even though it made my stomach turn, I never spoke up against it mainly due to my ignorance, confusion, and fear. I’ve been divorced from that family now for ten years and have carried this pain with me. The news this class is bring to my awareness is really opening my eyes, and my mouth because I will start speaking out against hate crimes. It’s not just someone else’s problem, it’s a problem for all of us.
Peace & Love!
I was a little shocked to see the news report about the noose found hanging around UMD campus tree. They are unsure if this was a hate crime, but most likely it was. I believe that this is related to the jena 6 case. I believe that there will always be racism in this country because it happened for so long, and some people cannot get out of that type of mind frame. As for the jena 6 case, these guys did commit a crime and they had to be punished
Wow, did I wake up in the 1950s? That obscence gesture at an educational institution, none the less, makes me physically ill. Actually, it induces many emotions, saddness, anger, and confusion. I believe that whomever did this should be expelled with no chance of appeal and lose any federal funding that they had recieved ( Pell Grants, Senetorial Scholarships, etc). I believe that the incident was related to the Jena 6 because of the nature of the act and the timeframe in which it happened.
This is ridiculous!! As civilized as our country is we still have acts of hate crime. I think the University of Maryland should punish the students responsible for the noose incident with the maximum punishment allowed. I believe that America as a country lets hate crimes just disappear. They do not act appropriately when it comes to justice. I think that this generation continues the raciest hate crime traditions because that is what they are taught growing up. I think that if our generation starts realizing that being prejudices is completely wrong, we as a society can change our country and not have to deal with these issues anymore.
When I heared about this story I literally looked up, shook my head and thought of an amazing quote by Jimi Hendrix, "when the power of love overcomes the love of power...the world will know peace." This statement means so much more than it's political intention. Why is racial supremacy and power so important in this day and age? As long as there are people in this world allowing themselves to be blinded by power and ignorant hate, there will never be a true love. Why is love so hard for many when it is so much easie and rewardingr to love and see the beauty in ones differences? I guess misery needs company. To these kids I say, what you did was no form of self expression or free speech, just proved your stupidity!. Oh and I'd like to know how they got in UMD for being so STUPIID!
FYI -There is a support day to free the Jena 6 and to bring attention to what happened. Wear Black on September 20th, if you would like a " Free the Jena 6" shirt they sell them for $10 on goodstorm.com .
How crazy, I'd have to say that im NOT surprised that hate crimes still occur b/c they've NEVEr stopped! I'm more surprise at the school it occurd at Maryland... i have a few associates that attend the school.. and i've even considered enrolling there. I also agree with Gale Marie it does effect all of us, but i feel only SOME of us are truely taken back..Everything in this society is Black or WHite... thats the easiest way to hurt or to make somone feel inferior. Race is a sensitive subject. b/c it was betrayed as such a negative way ppl cant help but to still see it that way. i also see and pay attention to if its not your race being offened then it dosent matter as much, but when it is "ALL hell will break lose"-- when i say that ppl will aoutomatically assume that the "black people" are the ones freaking out... and the "white people" are the ones apoojizing when the think or realize they offened you. Black and White. and there the easiest physical something to notice FIRST.. like if your going to sit by someone."the white girl may choose not to sit by the black boy... and white boy near the black girl... just to fell safe by what "your own kind"? who knows? also the way your rasied is a factor.....who you grew u with and are associated with to this day...i also understand that growing up you cant help it. theres also (i cant remember the word or phrase) but when a group of ppl are influenced by watever they are comfortable with it only takes one person with and ideal!!!!! Negative is the easiest thing to realize when it has to do with you...
thats my bottom line!
i do think its great that other races are outraged by such behavoir... and i also hope that the guys who provoaked the other students are punished as well if not ONLY!!!!
you'd think justice but an all white jury... makes you really think!!!!

When I first heard of this ridiculous act of racism I was shocked. I thought that we were over this craziness. I mean what is this world coming to we should all be look at as equals. No matter what skin color you are. These acts of racism need to stop it just hurting everyone around us and there is really no reason for this.
I thought UMD was filled with diversity so I can't understand where this is coming from. I wonder if the people behind this know what it really means to do this terrible act.
I think this is all crap, I mean who still thinks like this? I think the punishment should be simple, kick them out of school and have charges brought up o them for endangering lives. I am sure the black people on campus were affected greatly by this, to think that you are no longer safe. I think that an example needs to be made of these "noose hangers". The Jena six were troubled youths yes, they had convictions on them previously, but both parties should have gottenin trouble. Tio think that the white kids get off free for doing something like that is ridiculious. I can sympathize with the kid who is getting charges brought up on him, there are only so many racial comments, slurs, and violence a person can take before lashing back. Violence is obviously wrong, but what did those kids think wold happen after hanging a noose on a tree? in school colors? that just implies that white people own the school and no one else is welcome....this is america, everyone is welcome.
When I first heard about this incident my jaw droppped. This is ridiculious!! I know hate crimes still exist and everything but at such a high credited college such as UMD you'd think maybe students would be a little more mature. The people who engaged in the cruel noose "prank" should be expelled... that is if they are still attending the college. News reports said that the noose could have been there for years. Who knows?
i agree... why wait on punishment it's abvious what the punish ment should be but the question is will it happen????
This is ridiculous! It seems like everyday more and more things are popping up in the news. I think this whole thing is completely childish. I think by the time you get to college you should understand that everyone has different beliefs or ideas and that you just keep it to yourself! Some of my closest friends are black. so this incident really pisses me off.
I think that the college handeled it the best they could at the time because it was suc a shock and something that was so unexpected.I think that people don't realize how bad this makes people look. How it shows that human behavior can be so cruel and unkind and that it doesn't bother some.I think that the college has done the right thing in finding who did it. I think that it probably won't happen again because who ever did might have realized how disgusted everyone was.
