Playing Dress Up

from: Noel

What is the main idea this little girl is trying to portray? In this picture we see a young female girl who is demonstrating what she considers to be "dress up." When looking at this photograph, many questions begin to arise about gender socialization and what makes it right or wrong. Why is it that the majority of young girls like to dress up as princesses, fairies, and Barbie instead of baseball players or firefighters? Is one more feminine than the other? The dress in this picture symbolizes prettiness and attractiveness in the eyes of the little girl. What she believes is that playing this role means being more of a girl. The color of the dress socializes girls with pink as if there is to be truth in this whereas it is completely false. Nothing says that a girl must choose pink over the color blue. Why not a blue dress? Would it be any different? Her folding of her hands could be seen as her being uncomfortable. Is she really just playing a role? Does this girl, like many others in society feel that they need to participate in this role play in order to make themselves more attractive? Or maybe she has them folded because that is what women do when they are formally dressed up. When looking at her smile it almost looks forced or posed. Is she really happy or is this something that little girls are "supposed" to enjoy? Lastly, the background is blurred and darkened. It gives an idea that nothing else comes into view because all these thoughts are so focused on the little girl that nothing else is capable of shining through. Her innocence as a child has been washed away with all the ideas that are put into the minds of children today. How society and entertainment and parents unconsciously convey this message that there is a certain way for girls to act and a certain way for boys to act. That there needs to be something that separates or differentiates the two. What is this little girl trying to say?

Dress up is always funny to me. Because EVERYONE LOVES TO DRESS UP. I have no idea why its just a girls thing. I mean, i love shopping, you love shopping, why can i not do dress up? I mean, if boys want to dress up in their dads suits or their moms high heels, whatever... their kids. That is the best art about being a kid, you can do whatever you want and get away with it. Thats why i dont understand why people tell their kids what they cant do solely based on gender.
In this picture I dont see anything wrong with it, I think young girls dress up not necessarily because of what they see n TV but rather what they see at home. I think most young girls admire their mother and their fancy clothes and makeup. They just want to look like them.
