You can clearly see how much society has affected young children in the socialization of gender when you look at this image. If you are a male in this society you are almost accustomed to thinking that your gender is inferior to that of women because of what you have seen in the media or surrounding the environment that you maybe have been brought up in. The sad part is that it's almost a part of male genetic makeup
from birth. The male child or male children that wrote the message across the concrete wanted everyone to see it. I found this extremely significant to the topic at hand and that is why I chose to capture this shot. This message could be very hurtful to a young girl that maybe was walking by and saw it or maybe there was a young girl present at the time the message was written and it made her have a poor self image of herself. Childhood is such a fragile stage in life and our society is tearing children apart before they even enter into adulthood. I think that society as a whole needs to come together and recognize what our future generations are and will be encountering and
work to find a solution to this epidemic.

The picture “ Starting Small” captured by Kristina is a prefect demonstration of how the socialization of girls and boys starts out at such young ages. The image presents and demonstrates how young boys start to believe they are inferior to girls by the statement that was wrote by a young boy. The sidewalk chalk’s written words in the picture state“ ‘Boy’ Rule and ‘Grils’ ‘Drule.’” You know the boy who wrote this message for the girls to see was young because of the misspelled words within it. Remembering this phrase as a young girl, I feel this ideology from early childhood will continue to impact each girl or boy differently throughout the course of their lives.
If you are a girl, for example, it will continuously attack and construct your self-esteem and degrade you to feel less than the opposite sex. Hence, women who feel like they always have to be rescued by men in a time of need; a flat tire. On one extreme, this learned helplessness is contracted early on in life through messages that are sent to boys by older peers to dominate the girls in every aspect. It is projected at play time, school, naptime, and bedtime, that boys hold more power and are better. The picture could not of been any better and I would not change nothing about it. It dose not need a boy in it to be more empowering. You can tell straight from the content the gender of the writer and the sex of the targeted reader.
On the other hand, I believe this picture “ Starting Small” projects the complete opposite image to the boys. As this message continues its way through each generation as it did mine, I feel it will only keep sending the message to the boys that they are better than the girls. For instance, when examining today’s society, it shows statically that there are more men in politics, who have executive high paying jobs, and more power in government. Hence, this will become their “blank slates‘” ideology into adulthood.
Kristina’s picture definitely shows how the socialization of girls and boys “starts small.” When generations know longer remember this message “ Boys Rule and Girls Drool” in adulthood like I did, it may be the marker of gender equality in history. Until then, it will always exist somewhat in reality because of the traditional patriarchal dominance throughout history. In shot, this picture present the powerful message of how young children get socialized in society differently. This images continuously makes me realize how precious childhood is in regards to teaching your children good morels since they will be with them for the rest of their lives; generation after generation.
