Living in Black and White

from: Lauren

In my photo there is a seventeen-year-old girl in a bathroom getting ready to go out. This picture is a perfect example of gender
socialization because she is wearing a dress and straightening her hair, which is seen as a feminine and girly. Dresses are seen as the appropriate attire for female teens, and women. Her mismatched socks show that she is still young, even though she may not look it by her appearance. The fact that she is in color and the background is black and white is meant to show that she is trying to stand out and be different, but she is still stuck in the whole stereotype towards women and young girls. The hair straightener is also in color, and serves as a connection between young girls and society's image portrayal and gender stereotypes.

The stereotype of real women being beautiful is still prevalent in the society. Every woman tries to be beautiful and want to be praised by others. Women have a belief that they should work to expose their beauty. So, most of the women waste lots of time in make-ups and several other things to expose their beauty. Although, the world is changing day by day, the concept about women has not changed, and every person in the society wants to see the beautiful girl. So women spend a lot of time of their life to be beautiful.
In this picture, a girl of 17 is trying to make her beautiful. In fact, this time was to study for her class and prepare for her upcoming exams. But, girls like her work more to be more beautiful, than for the exams. If this stereotype doesnot change soon, the condition of women will remain same throughout. The development in technology has made the life busier and people are having lesser and lesser leisure time. If women takes more than a hour just for the make up, how will she move with this busier life and how will she compete with others?
