Purging Insecurities

from: Carolyn

In the life of a typical teenage girl, there are more pressures and labels placed upon them than most people fully realize. They are constantly surrounded by models with unrealistic figures and faces to match. There is not a single girl who is able to completely ignore these expectations, because there is a certain need for acceptance in everyone.

Purging Insecurities is displaying one of the many corners that girls are often pushed into to meet said expectations. The girl in the photograph sneaks into the bathroom at her work after every meal in order to become what she believes she is supposed to be. She perceives her reflection in the mirror to be revealing every imperfection, even those that do not exist. Purging has become somewhat of an addiction for her, she knows its wrong, but the part of her that believes that she needs to be skinny to be accepted is overpowering her better judgment. After relieving herself, she walks back into the real world as if it never happened, but the magazines that she worships stay tucked under her arm as if they are a safety net. The lyrics written overtop of the photographs are to a song titled, "Skin and Bones," by Mariana's Trench. The song is written about bulimia and the feelings that go on behind the destructive disease, rather than the stereotype of someone who simply wants to be thin. This disease is one of the most serious consequences of the stress that is put on teenage girls, and will continue to occur as long as the pressure is prevalent.

I choose to comment on this picture because I like how it portrays the extreme lengths girls will go to to fit a certain image. The girl in the picture is obviously unhappy with her image and thinks that forcing herself to throw up will help her to achieve the image that she thinks is acceptable. I like how the photo shows the four different steps in the girls day. It shows her looking in the mirror and obviously upset and then goin into the bathroom. Then it also shows her coming out of the bathroom still looking unhappy. I think that this photo did a good job in displaying the disadvantages in gender socialization in girls.

This picture and title are extreme and very interesting. I think it really shows the lengths in which girls of the youngest of ages will go to look the best they can. I thnk that its interesting that no matter what the girl does, she still is not happy and still wanting more. I think thats whats wrong with the magazines and media... it teaches these young girls that they will never look like this but keep trying and maybe you might one day. When will society see that by allowing these types of media to exist, we will continuously hurt our young women?
