why aren't there any boys?

From: Kinsey
This photo was taken at a recent dress rehearsal for my dance studios next performance, and if you notice in the picture there are no men or boys. This picture portrays gender socialization in today's society very clearly. In today's dance world the majority of dancers are female; I have met a small amount of male dancers in comparison to the amount of female dancers I have met. Growing up every child is taught gender socialization, we are taught that certain things are for girls and certain things are for boys. Dance is an activity that boys will look at and think that they shouldn't be doing that because they might get made fun of. Dance is not considered a manly activity, also like crying about their feelings or wearing the wrong clothes. The mass majority of our society looks down on men who dance, just like men crying. This all starts from a very early age; gender socialization influences parents on whether to put their daughter in ballet or soccer lessons, and boys for guitar or football lessons. The people in this picture most likely had the decision to be in dance classes made by their parents because it is thought of as a woman sport, instead of signing them up for something like soccer or lacrosse because those are considered male sports. The decisions that our parents make for us shapes the decisions we make for ourselves and gender socialization is a big influence on all of our decisions. These decisions influence on how we think of gender roles, and who we will become, and what our interests are in life.
