Backlash‏

from: Hannah
This photo shows a picture of my friend Zac. One of the first things about this photo that you might notice is the coloring. One the left side it has no color what so ever, but he is happy. On the other side the colors are quite vibrant although he seems barely content. The color represents what is thought of as the “right way” to how society looks at what interests men should and shouldn’t have. As you can see on the left side there is an assortment of girly things such as hair stuff, colorful background, paint and other arts and craft stuff as well as beauty supplies. These objects violate the gender prescriptions of a young male. When a boy is seen playing with things like these he can have backlash effects by parents, teachers and possibly even peers. Some might think that these activities can lead to homosexuality because they are partaking in opposite gender activities.  As you can see on the other side there are very masculine things such as assorted tools, a knife, and video games. There is even a football related rug. When a boy is growing up he is expected to do things like play video games or help out with jobs using tools. These types of activities are things that boys do growing up that will make them appear more aggressive, independent, and strong instead of picking up girl traits like niceness and weak. Boys growing up tend to get steered away and sometimes even disciplined if they do more girly things, while if girls do manly things they are just looked at as being more of a tom boy instead of being labeled.  The main point of this photo is to show that even when someone is following what society expects of them as they are growing up, it doesn’t always make them a happy person. Sometimes it’s the exact opposite that can make someone happy and they will grow up to be just as masculine as a guy who followed all the stereotypes to be masculine.

In the picture I see a perfect example of how society's views of people affects everyone, from little kids to grown men and women. Here you see a grown man who is affected by society and cannot show his true self. On the outside he does the "manly things"such as playing call of duty, which refers to killing and the military idea of soldiers being tough. He also has tape measures and hammers to show a masculine figure of a tough guy. However, on the left side of this photo, we see what his true inner self might really be. He has beauty supplies, colorful arrangements, arts and crafts, and also hair products. This could be the true man he is, but it cannot be shown due to societies view on gender. The right side portrays being manly, which is considered morally correct for men, while the left side, noted as his happier side, has to be hidden due to his fear of how people would view him. This is a problem with society that will hopefully change. Society should not have the right to tell a person that they must follow a particular gender role in order to be happy.
