The Mirrored girl Image

from: Katie

This particular project I felt was interesting to be able to realize what someone younger than me, at this point in time may think about themselves or what they see. I had lots of photo ideas but this one sort of jumped out at me. My friend and I walked in on her younger sister putting on her makeup and trying on her clothes. I thought this was interesting to me. It never really occurred to me that she was always trying to hang out with us or talk like us. I felt that i needed to sneak in a picture, so i took it of her looking into the mirror. I thought that it was appropriate because it was more or less what she saw in her reflection. I felt as if she was trying to act older but now she also wanted to look older. I feel that media puts out this image for little girls, that being older and beautiful is all that life is about. Her younger sister is 12, I think she looks older then 12 and I believe that this is the media's fault. I also believe that there is a particular girl image that is portrayed. My friends little sister is a perfect example of this girl image. My friends little sister is trying to get a reflection of an older women. Only one closet door is open in the background because with this mind set of girl image not that many doors will open for you in life. In the mirror is what we see and sometimes we change so much, to get that "girl image" that the media tells us is correct. No matter if there are mirrors or doors the media changes what a little girl may see in herself.

Being that I am the older sister in my family I have noticed how my younger sister looks up to me. She tries to imitate my clothes, music and all over look I have. I can understand where she is coming from because I did the same thing when I was her age. I looked up to my cousins not because I wanted to be exactly like them but because they seemed confident and I wanted to have the confidence and personality they had. I think that having a positive role model when you are a young girl is important so they learn to grow up with confidence and are a good person.

This girl is just another product of her environment, she sees her sister do one thing and she wants to follow. I think its important for girls to understand the difference in wanting to be older and acting mature and just looking older. Just because you may look older doesnt make you more grown up. The media does and always will target younger and younger girls to buy there products, and until women receive more power and move up in the world, this wont change.
