Future Part-Time Pop Stars

from: Krystal

So here’s a picture of two little girls. One wants what the other has. It’s that simple right? Wrong. Hallie, 5 years old, is dressed as usual in a Hannah Montana t-shirt. Most little girls are looking up to Hannah these days. And why not? She does have the “best of both worlds.” In Hallie’s hands is the latest version of some teen pop magazine which is actually a manual that tells teenagers how to be pretty and get the hot guy. The bizarre thing is that obviously she isn’t a teenager. Next to Hallie is Gracie, 7 months old. She has put down her baby doll and is reaching for her big sisters magazine. Although somewhat dramatized this picture is saying that the media is beginning to target younger and younger audiences. Hallie represents the girls who are already conforming to the socially constructed idea of beauty and popularity, while Gracie represents the girls who are just beginning to reach for it. I included the baby doll in the picture to show true age appropriate toys although it was pushed to the side. The picture was taken at an angle slightly above the children as to be seen from an adult perspective. You be the judge if this is good for your little girls or not.

The funny thing about this photo I think that make the biggest point is the fact that the doll is to the side of the youngest child. In today society I believe that the youngest children always look forward to things that teenagers do. This photo is a prime example of how most young girls lookup to their older sister no matter how much of a difference between their age. I never thought that girls that young would be interested in a teen magazine. The fact that she has on a Hannah Montana shirt explains that she should be more interested in Hannah Montana things. I think this is a good example of how young girls want to grow up way to fast.

Thats a very interesting point. The younger the pop stars, the younger the audience is. Its ont thing when Madonna was in her 20's and teeenagers wanted to be like her, it entirely different when miley cyrus is wht 14? who is her audience besides 14 year olds...9-13? People are growing up way too fast. I can understand now how parents look at us and say times are changing, becasue they already are and we dont even have kids yet. I think it is very wrong for these magazines to advertise how to be beautiful and get the hot guy....what does that teach our young children? sex will become a much larger issue in this next generation.
