I find this point of view to be completely true! I have had a full time job since I was 16 and it was only this year that I finally cut down my hours and started working part time. The need for money and a more lavish life style affects everyone. People who are that young should not have to deal with those affects and concerns of such a life style, but they are. Showing that the influence around them from other adults who work that much are making them think that they do.
I totally agree, i only work a part time job right now, and i find myself looking to work more hours to make more money to have the life style that i want. but i'm still very young and this is my first year of college so i'm living at home with my parents and they are showing me that i don't need to take on so much right now. But i still see all my friends working so much and not having any time for themselves because society is saying that its okay for these young people to act and take on the reasonability like an adult.
I definitely relate! Since sixteen I've had this fixation with working, and working as much as I could to achieve my ideal 'lifestyle'. Always wanted more hours, and in some cases even applying for second and third jobs - I was determined! Money just seem to makes things easier, and made me less dependant on my parents for leisure of my own. Society has a way of emphasizing money as happiness, and the influence is only increasing in strength. Young adults should be aware of money and its importance, but it shouldn't play a major role in there young lives.
I can relate to this from within my family, friends and the people I work for. From circumstances I have seen, alot of Americans want to out do their friends and family. It's who has the most toys, biggest house, nicest clothes etc. Having all these things I think make people feel like they are really successful. I know a couple who both have very good jobs, and work 60+ hours a week They have two kids and it's not at all necessary for both to work so much. However they have every toy imagineable,a big house, and buy their kids everything to make up for the time they are not there. It's really sad to see adults working so much when they don't have to, especially when kids are involved.
