I chose these two photos because I feel that they represent the part of girl culture that tells us that being thin is the only way to be truly beautiful. In both halves of the picture you see Ann in a party dress, holding in her stomach to make herself look thinner. In the left hand photo Ann is in black and white and her face is blurred, and the right hand picture is in full color and you can see most of her face; I chose to do this to demonstrate the differences between what a girl sees in the mirror and how she really looks. Ann also looks thinner on the right half, which suggests that what you see in the mirror might not be what you look like to the rest of the world. When girls look in the mirror they no longer see themselves, they see a distorted image and can't see what they truly look like. Girls rarely just glance in the mirror; now they stare at their reflection, trying to see what they need to change in order to be considered "pretty." This idea that all women need to be one body type is so pervasive that no matter what body type you have, you want to be thinner because you always feel that you aren't good enough as you are. As you can see in my picture, Ann is quite thin already, she gets many compliments on her appearance, and yet, as you can see, the media has taught her that the thinner she, is the better looking she'll be.

This picture demonstrates the outrageous effects on a woman’s self image created by the media. This girl is obviously very thin, and by her facial expressions and body language it is clear that she is still uncomfortable with her body. The blurred image in the reflection is a great way to show how girls see themselves when they look in the mirror. Arguably, the most disturbing part of the photo is how even in the reflection where the girl is slightly larger, she is still very thin and thinks that she should be thinner. This picture is important in understanding how a lot of females with eating disorders see themselves. Many girls with bulimia or anorexia say that no matter what other people say they don’t see themselves as thin when they look in the mirror, which is clearly represented by the blurred face and not as thin waistline. Many girls will also say they avoid mirrors at all costs, just so they don’t have to see themselves. The media has taught girls that mirrors are their enemy. No matter what a woman’s shape or size is, when they look in a mirror they should feel proud and comfortable in their own skin.
This picture shows exactly how girls are when they are getting ready or trying to impress a boy. Girls look at models in the magazines and they think that is how they need to look so girls will do anythign to look just like them. Being thin is a big thing in our society, if your not think, you are made fun of and talked about. Girls see themselves as bigger and different when they look at themselves in the mirror. We will see them as thin and beautiful and they will see themselves as fat and unattractive. The girl in the mirror is showing what a lot of girls do before they go out or just to see how they look, but some girls wont even look into the mirror, they avoid them.
I love this photo! It shows what most girls see as they look in the mirror. FAT! I personally went through a time in my life where no matter how thin I was when I looked in the mirror I saw myself as too fat. I love that the mirror image is in black and white to enhance that it is not the true image. The photo portrays the fight that most girls have with their mirrors every day.
This picture could not be a more perfect example of today’s society for women. The one image that is being promoted the most is skinny women. In all media types, women are seen a lot being between 90-115 pounds. If any bigger, it is considered being ugly. In Libby’s photo, Ann’s hands are not far from one another when placing one on her back and one on her stomach. It says in the photo that she gets complimented all the time about her body, but she still spends time staring in the mirror critiquing her body. The media plays a major role in that. This is so true in so many females of all ages. The media and images of women in the media give us this superficial ideal female that a lot of us try to conform to, and this photo is a perfect example.
This is a really good photo it shows how many girls today feel about themselves. Girls take a look in the mirror and constantly pick themselves apart wondering how they would like "how would I look like if I did this" or what they could do to make them look better. The media on television and magazines is what giving girls ideas on how to look better.
I think everyone feels like we have to look a certain way, be certain way, and be someone other than ourselves. Also when we look in the mmirror people see what they want how what others see. Test yourself go one day without looking in a mirror? Relay on what you know and others opinion. Like shopping you always stand in a dressing room starring in a mirror and that determines what you by. I found I find get comfortable clothes if i don't use a mirror. I go by how I fel in it then i ask someone, even a stranger for their opinion, then I lok in the mirror. we place to much emphasis on being a mirror image of a magazine, if that's the cse hang a picture on the wall not a mirror and stare at it. You will always see what you want.
I thought this photograph was creative for showing the two different ways girls see their bodies. It is often never good enough and the skinnier the better. The realistic color versus the black and white ideal image shows how distorted body images can appear in females. The reinforcement a girl recieves when losing weight, whether it was on purpose or due to other factors such as illness, creates a constant struggle with body weight for almost every female.
thin is in and this photo is a good example of a girl looking at her figure as all women do..she is in a dress that shows her thin figure. we look in the mirror but do not always see the correct image of ourselves..think that this is important for girls to see
Women are constantly critiquing themselves because of who they see on the media. Women try and picture themselves being just like the models they see in magazines and on TV shows, but it is just unachievable. This picture demonstrates how media tells women there is no such thing as “too thin.” The girl in this picture already looks tiny, but she is imagining herself even skinnier! I believe women should not worry so much about being “thin” and recognize their body type, and start worrying about their health.
This is a really good photo! I think its so relevant to today's world. A lot of girls see pictures of supermodels and then look at themselves and see all the negatives. A lot of girls forget that these supermodels are not a realistic and attainable body. I definitely think the fashion industry has a negative effect on some girls perceptions of body image.
