From Kirsty
I chose to use this picture because I find that it depicts the Socialization of Gender in early childhood. Without even knowing it parent's begin socializing their children from a very young age. Males typically play with toys that lead to character building. The skills acquired include, independence, dominance, as well as technical skills. The toys that young girls play with acquire skills such as, nurturing, being a mother, and daily household skills.

With out having any knowledge that the parents are actually starting the socialization of gender they buy toys that are right for
the gender of the child. However who says that girls only need toys that teach them nurturing. It is very rare that a young girl will be given a baseball or a race car, because these are stereotypically male toys. The Bear in my photo represents the type of toys that female children are given. I would have preferred to use a kitchen set or a doll, however I do not know anyone who owns these.

The socialization of children begins the moment they can learn. They are taught by those around them how to be a guy or girl. I chose to use a light yellow background because it is very gender neutral. It shows that these toys are strictly male and female. If both a male and female child were to talk into this room there is a slim chance that the boy would go for the teddy bear and the girl the car. It amazes me that even at such a young age, the child's future begins merely with the toys he/she plays with. The memories of what the child learned at this age becomes a subconscious thought and will always be remembered.
