Kitchen Ready

From: Emma
In a daycare mainly for 3-7 year olds, there is a station called housekeeping. I decided to take a photo of this particular area for the following reasons. The housekeeping station comes complete with a kitchen(in the picture), a dinner table, a fridge, high chair, and babies galore even though they cannot be seen in the photo. In the photo the kitchen is a miniature version of a real home kitchen. Everything is carefully labeled and it's equipped with everything that a housewife would normally need to take on the heavy duty grease stains on the stove. The reason I say housewife is because there is a something very interesting in the picture, that gives off to me personally , the impression that this housekeeping station is intended for girls. That something is the flowery hot pink apron and mittens, hung right on the cabinet door handle. It almost seems to be saying , you spend a great amount of time in the kitchen, so you want to be able to keep the apron handy and ready at all times. I just couldn't help but be transported back to the 50s housewife image, of a women with pearls, nicely done make-up and an apron. The kitchen also comes with recipe books, a very nice bright yellow tea set, pots and pans etc. There is also something else in this picture that I found very interesting. The puppet set of a doctor, firemen, mailman, veterinarian, and a repairmen left on top of the stove. They are all women puppets, and I found it odd that of all places they were in the kitchen. I then asked myself, "if there is a doctor puppet, why don't we start setting up miniature doctor offices, and start hanging white coats on doors instead of aprons?" Is it possible that maybe in our society, now in day it sure does embrace more women having successful careers, but to remember that the kitchen is still a place for them to be and always be. I did not move anything or embellish anything either in the photo, I took the picture exactly as it was.

i like this picture because i find it odd that little girls enjoy pretending to do house work. it is such a typical representation of the stereotypical gender of chrildren that its rather odd why people cannot make the connection. why instead of having little girls play "house" dont parents encourage them to play with something that would help teach them skills that would be usefull in the work force is beyond me.
