Genderizing Children

From: Chelsea

From the time children are born, they are taught what gender they are by getting toys, clothes, and being taught their over all appearance of their appropriate sex. In this picture all the colors of the toys and wall are pink and purple, which are both very girly colors. Also, she is playing with a kitchen set, while holding her baby doll. This is teaching her to take care of her child while keeping the house together, otherwise being domesticated, which are our societies social demands of women. There are also a doll set and a dirt devil in her room. These are also very girl-related toys. The background in this picture there are Disney princesses on the wallpaper, I really wanted to include this because as we talked in class, these figures have a lot of influence on little girls. This also proves in my picture because she is wearing a tinker bell dress up outfit in this picture. I chose to make this picture on an angle to show that this isn’t really fair to children when we only buy them one gender of toys. She is also only taking up a small portion of the picture because, as in Disney movies, she will learn that when she grows up the thing that she really needs in life is a husband and family to feel whole. Over all, the point I am trying to make with this picture is that when our society finds out when they are pregnant with a girl, from that point on, we and everyone who is close with us, will buy girl related everything, and I think that I show this with the picture of this 3 year old little girl.

I believe that most parents buy toys for their children based on what they believe their child will enjoy playing with. Society decides the way boys and girls should act and the toys that are appropriate for their gender. Parents automatically go to the toys that are meant or their child based on their gender without thinking what the toys will teach their kids about how they should behave accordingly to their gender. I think the parents who bought their daughter a kitchen set in this picture bought it with the intention she will have fun playing with it, not that it will teach her she should be a domestic wife who cooks and cleans.

This picture stands out most for me because I’ve seen it so many times over the years with little cousins, friends sisters, etc. Little girls are often given gifts that are so gender-specific it’s almost outrageous. Really, what is 3 year old girl going to do with a toy vacuum besides ram it into her other toys. Things such as the toy stove/oven only further make domestic housework seem to be a female task. Another thing that was a nice touch with the photo is how the girl is dressed as a princess, all while doing these domestic tasks. The baby doll under her arm is also just another one of the many key touches that point towards a little girl being crammed into a genderized role. The fact that this girl is also only three years old is saying something. No matter what, girls are going to fall into gender specific roles because of the media, parental influences, etc, but is 3 years old too young? That is something that many parents should think about before they purchase their 2 year old daughter a plastic kitchen set for Christmas.

This picture is perfect to describe young girls playing with young Disney characters. The young girl is showing cooking and cleaning just like snow white did in her fairytale. The girl is also dressed up just as snow white would be dressed in. You can tell that all the girls are bright colors. Bright colors are focused on girl toys and clothes by the media. The castle in the background is very influential on girls at a young age as well. The castle can tell girls that when they get older they want to live in a big house just like a castle.

I agree with what Gabrielle said because parents today dont just by toys for their kids because they want him or her to do that aas their occupation when they get older.
