First let me start by telling you the reason I chose the name I did for this photo. I believe that there is more to gender than the normal “black and white”, thus I chose the title “The Gray Area”. As we know, gender is socially constructed and is therefore learned. What I wanted to portray is the acceptance of pushing the boundaries of social norms and making it okay to do so without suffering negative repercussions. The children in the picture are adolescent boys playing with what society would call “normal boy toys”; wrestlers, balls, hammer, etc. While in the background, the television is on a very popular girl program called iCarly. Though it may seem as if they have their back turned on the television, in reality they are doing what is a normal occurrence for them. Take a break from the show to continue on with their previous activity and shortly after the picture was taken, their eyes were once again fixed on their favorite television show. I captured the photo on an angle to try and demonstrate that society as a whole is still not comfortable with males in particular showing any type of feminine values. I made the children the focal point while trying to ensure the television program spoke for itself in context with the rest of the photo. In conclusion, I believe that these boys are the future of gender socialization, or what we can hope gender socialization will one day be. Because they show that they know how to be boys, yet still are not afraid to cross the social boundaries in order to make themselves happy.

wow i definitely like this picture! it is strong in portraying the fact that boys can watch so called "girl" shows and play with boy toys at the same time. It is a step in the right direction and i think that it is an improvement. It shows how kids are learning but most of all i think it shows good parenting because they are being exposed to both female and male things and giving them the choice of being who they want to be.
I love the color of this photo. it takes away from all the blue and red colors on the boy's toys and focuses more on the actual aspect of the photo. The young boys may be playing with their typical boy toys, but in the background they are listening to a mostly girl show, "iCarly." It shows how these young boys can be comfortable playing with their boy toys, but also comfortable enough to watch a girl show on tv, simply because they enjoy the show. They aren't letting the gender stereotypes put on by society stop them from doing everything they want to do.
