This picture of a girl breaking what most people would consider traditional gender roles, is an example of many girls in America that stray away from this "girly" stigma. Most girls in this society aren't raised or socialized to perform roles that are deemed masculine, such as hunters in this case. The picture shows a girl in all camouflage in a forested background, in hand, a crossbow with mounted scope. The weapon symbolizes the power and "toughness" role that is usually assumed by men. Use of violence or deadly force is usually seen in society as something that only men participate in, which isn't always true. In fact, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife survey from 2007 shows that the number of female hunters, which is around 10% of the nation's 12.5 million hunters, has grown in the last two decades especially in younger female hunters. Still, 10% of hunters being female is a surprising statistic when you think about how young girls are socialized in our society today. Another symbol in this picture is the use of make-up on the girls face. Make-up is supposed to make a girl more attractive and "dolled-up", but in this case she uses it to help mask her face in the woods. This of course symbolizes the broken gender scripts that are displayed by her performing a traditional masculine role through the use of make-up in a non traditional role. The base idea of this photo is to show that girls don't always follow the gender scripts that society forms, and for them to know that it's okay to do so. Also that boys and girls alike don't have to necessarily follow just one gender script, but mix them however you like and follow your own script.

I really like this photo the best. She is clearly breaking all of the gender roles. Girls are not expected to hunt or wear clothes that men generally wear. I think this photo shows a strong girl who is breaking the rules of society.
