"Sexy" Girl

from Sarah
Jessica, the girl in this picture, is only 14 years old. As you can see, the way she is posing and the outfit she is wearing presents a huge problem in society today. She is wearing lingerie and pushing her breasts up with her hand to make them look bigger. She thinks that she looks "sexy" like this, and that if she shows a lot of skin and acts older than she really is, she will get more attention, particularly sexual attention from the opposite sex. The media is one of the main reasons young girls, like Jessica, act and look the way they do today. The media persuades girls to wear skimpy clothes and act "sexy" in order to be accepted in society and to be noticed. Because of this, girls think guys will not like them unless they get to see their whole body and get sexual attention from them. This portrayal of women is affecting girls at younger and younger ages as the years go by. Years ago, people would be appalled to see a 14 year old showing so much skin. Some people might see it as "normal" but this is not the way a young girl should be acting. Not to mention the stuffed animals behind her, which shows how much of a kid she still is and how unprepared she is mentally to take on such a "sexual" role. What the media and society are teaching girls is to use their bodies as objects of sex and power, and just that. They are making girls think that the only way they will get recognized is by acting and dressing in promiscuous ways. This is a huge problem in society and it is affecting girls at a younger and younger age over time. The way the media portrays women is not okay and more needs to be done to address this issue better.

This is a perfect image of the pressure on girls in society to express their girly image. All of the scattered details of the picture point out that this young woman feels like she needs certain accesories and "girly" decorations in order to be classified feminine. This illustration reveals her concern about her sexual appearance to the opposite gender by showing her hand on her breast. In addition to her hand, the pink color of her dress is also screaming for the attention of a male. Last of all, the way this young woman views herself in the mirror shows slight insecurity to what other people might think about her. As you can see, the various details and colors of this photo explain only a few different ways society weights such heavy pressure on female gender expectations.

What I find most symbolic about this photograph is that the girl’s face is not shown. This suggests that her identity is not determined by her own means, but rather it is determined by the objects laid out before her. Not seeing her face also objectifies this young girl, making her seem less human. She is surrounded by beauty products and images of what society considers attractive. These products and images take up a large portion of the photograph, symbolizing the overwhelming pressure that the beauty industry places on girls and women. In the mirror you can see her partial reflection, but most of her body is blocked by the pictures of female models, suggesting that her body is less valuable then the body of a model.

When viewing this photo my immediate thought about this young girl is that she is extermly confused. With everything in the back ground from the photo on the mirror everything layed out on her dresser and the bright colors. It is as though she does not know what she wants to do with her self.I t is as though she wants to be like everyone else included just like the media. This is common for young girls to act this way at this age and time. Due to the media making this think this is the way they are supposed to be to fit in.
