The photo I choose to
submit is one of my little sister, Jaclyn. The reasoning behind choosing this
photo over the countless other's I have of her is because it was a candid shot
which exposed how I truly feel about how the media is ruining childhood. The media,
is our cultural ideal of what a man or a woman should be, this includes how
they should act and what the should wear. It trickles down even further to
count in what we play with, who we talk to, what we may or may not read and how
we view ourselves in day to day life. The subject in my photograph is only
twelve years old and yet, already she feels the need to wear heavy make up and
imitate celebrity fashion. Eye shadows, liners, mascara and though you can't
see it she was wearing a bright red lipstick as well. The media has dictated
all of this right down to her playing with her My Littlest Pet Shop. However,
inside all of the media fire that she should be this way, that she needs make
up, low cut shorts and a low cut shirt to get noticed. As evident in the photo
as well, she continues to feed into the media stereotype set for her by reading
a book about a young girl who ends up having to hide who she is (including
gender) in order to pay off a debt in which she ends up falling in love with
the "Prince" of the Host Club.
