Beauty Standards‏

From: Rachel

This photo represents the ongoing struggle that women face trying to live up to beauty standards. "Women are also eager to mask the naturalness of their facial features and expressions with cosmetics. Their widespread use reflects women repackaging themselves for male consumption"(Wolf,1991). Many women find the need to apply makeup to better fit their gender script, in this case becoming more feminine, to be seen as more attractive. Doing this makes them more accepted by society. The subject in the photo is applying a heavy amount of makeup, and all of the products are layed out. The picture of the famous movie stars in the background are examples of people to look like. They played their gender scripts well, and were rewarded and looked up for it.

I do agree that most women do put makeup on and wear heels to gain self-confidence, but also to be accepted by males and other females too. I think the color red sometimes, when over used, represents rousing and sexiness. The young lady in the photo is over using it with red lip color, red hair, and long black eyelashes in order to please herself by getting attention from others. But it could also represent that she is expressing her feminine side, that a female must look sexy. I also noticed the male photo in the background. It can represent how women viewed by men, as a sexy objects. Some men and the media view women as a sex object, and women should wear heavy makeup and heels in order to be accepted as women.

Makeup is such a huge part of most girls everyday ritual, I’m sure many of you know girls that wouldn’t be caught dead outside of the house without their makeup on. Society has planted into the brain of many girls that they are not beautiful unless they cover their real face with something else to look pretty. The amount of cosmetics found in some girls bathrooms is astonishing. Though the message that young women receive is that we all need to look like the models and stars on TV and makeup helps with that. In the picture you can tell she is wearing makeup from her red eye shadow and lips, also all of the cosmetics laid out on her counter top. The picture on the bottom right is of Marylyn Monroe, who was the beauty symbol back in the day; the girl in the picture seems to be trying to fit that image into today’s society.
