Young girls in our society today learn what they think their gender “norm” is. They think they have to be a size zero, wear high heels and put on a ton of make-up. Girls are also taught that doing boy things such as playing sports or liking action figures is wrong. In this photo there are 3 young girls that I babysit, 2 of the girls are your ideal females; wearing heels, looking at girl magazines and putting on make-up. While the 3rd girl is atypical because she is wearing soccer gear and sitting on the soccer ball implying that she plays that sport. One of the main ideas of this photo is that the atypical girl is being left out and ignored. You can see this because the girl in the background is out of focus and a little blurry. She also is looking down and doesn’t look happy by the way she is sitting and has her head in her hand. Another main idea of this photo is that younger girls are looking up to the older girls who dress and act like a girly girls. In this photo the younger girl (front, left) is looking at the older girl (front, right) which implies she is looking up to her and seeking guidance from her. The older girl is looking at a Glamour magazine which is usually something a teenager would look at. She is also wearing very high heels for such a young age which suggests she is trying to be older than she actually is. Both of the front girls have make-up in front of them, so this shows that they may be looking in the magazine for models to imitate. I placed them outside because outdoors is a symbol of being young and your childhood since younger kids are usually seen playing outside. There is a color scheme of blue, the goal, the soccer players’ cleats and the towels the two front girls are laying on are all blue. The color blue usually represents sadness, so I used this color because the girl is the background is obviously sad but the two front girls may be secretly unhappy with the way society forces girls to be one way and doesn’t allow any diversity.

I agree with everything Conniann said, but I see it bit more in the background and focus of the picture. The little girl sitting on the soccer ball being out of focus also illustrates that the camera (representing perhaps society?) is literally not seeing her properly, as though she is not perceived the way she would like by others and they don’t actually see her for who she is. In the background you also see a typical suburban house, and when you think of typical Americans you think of suburbia, this shows that this prevalent issue is widespread and everywhere; kids feeling the same way as the girl on the ball. The sidewalk also being in the foreground can represent the “path” that girls are supposed to walk when it comes to beauty standards and being accepted. The glamour girls are very close to this “path,” while the other girl is quite far away, highlighting her separation from the group. The laptop in front of the glamour girls could represent the media, and that they are looking to it for guidance.
