This is a picture of Katie. A female not exactly fitting the social role of being the “girly-girl”. Society makes girls out to be ditsy, not intelligent, always caring about doing their hair, makeup, or nails. In the reading it said that girls usually don’t test well on math and science, and that usually it was a masculine thing because boys test better then girls on math and science and take job occupations in that field. Females were always taught that it was okay to get the problem wrong and that they didn’t really have to worry much about dealing with the problem, always just pushing it aside. I set this picture up in a corner in Katie’s room, to show that she is boxed in because she is hiding from the typical dumb, hot, blonde stereotype. The camera is shown to be “looking down” on her because she is actually studying, doing her math instead of doing her hair, or make up products right next to her and choosing to read a math book over the magazine cosmopolitan like a stereotypical girl would be doing. Also, since Katie is a blonde it shows that she is also going out of the culture of being the “dumb blonde” like society always tries to joke about. She is a blonde female doing her math homework instead of her make up, hair, and nails’, not fitting into the “girl-culture” that society shows.

I like the whole idea of this picture and how you chose to portray the “smart” girl versus the “dumb” girl. I totally agree with almost everything you said, but I did find the whole magazine and beauty products laying beside her interesting. Instead of only showing the contrast of what she’s doing, compared to what society thinks she should be doing, I got something else also from this part of the picture. When I looked at the picture, I did see that she was holding a textbook versus the magazine, but with the beauty products and magazines laying rite next to her I took it as maybe even though she is being the “atypical” girl, there’s still a little piece of her that does want to fit into society which is represented by the little corner of “girly” stuff. Even though she’s not physically holding it, she still has it rite beside her.
I love that the title of this picture is called legally blonde. I get the idea that this young girl is trying to fit in but still is studying a math book, which breaks the gender role because science and math is meant for men rather than girls. Pretty girls are expected to care only about their looks and can't be smart but this picture shows females caring more about the book smarts, i get this idea from the fact the book is on top. I get she is sitting in a corner like on the floor but i almost get a sense of shame and worry because she is breaking the gender role. And the girl products around her were a good way to show that people can like books and beauty, as long with breaking the gender roles.
