There are many different types of gender roles that take place in today’s society. For instance, when you think of ice hockey I'm sure you don’t picture a girl playing, right? Most people think of these big tough guys, maybe missing some teeth, and the guys out there hitting each other and fighting. Girls aren’t supposed to be playing rough and tough sports. They are supposed to be in the stands cheering their men on or out getting their nails and hair done. But this is not always the case. I took this picture from the balcony in the stands of my good friend, Meghan Huertas, who is currently attending University of Vermont and playing on the D1 women’s ice hockey team. Although women’s ice hockey isn’t a professional sport yet in the United States, there is still a women’s Olympic team that girls can strive to be on along with D1 and D3 college teams to play for. With gender roles we put the guys with the big macho, hard hitting, and intense sports but never girls. Some of the time when people hear I play ice hockey they don’t think I can really play and keep up with the guys until they come see me play, they always seem so impressed by how well I play “for a girl”. But in reality, you shouldn’t be judged on your ability to play the game by what sex you are, if you’re good then you’re good, no matter what.

I think this picture challenges the stereotype that girls can’t play sports. Due to gender roles, we normally associate men with hard hitting sports such as football or hockey. Our society sees women’s place as more on the sidelines cheering on the men instead of out on the field. After all, women are taught to be pretty, play nice, and be considerate of everyone around them. However, if one was to look at the hockey player in this picture, they wouldn’t even know that the player was actually a female. The female hockey player is the main focus of the picture. This could represent an empowerment for women who play male dominated sports. There has been some backlash and aggression towards women who play men’s sports. Yet, with more skilled women striving to “play with the big dogs” in the male dominated world of sports, it is important that women are given the same opportunities that are provided to men.
