Gender Socialization

From: Margaret

In this photo, the little girl is performing a dance because loves to dance and she has a dream of becoming a “ballerina princess” when she gets older. She is wearing pajamas with the Disney Princess Cinderella. Although Cinderella is not known as a ballerina or dancer, the little girl is representing a concept of gender socialization because she is wearing gender-typed clothing that ensures gender appropriate treatment from strangers. The little girl’s princess pajamas are more delicate and restrictive, which inhibits play and promotes gender-stereotypic behavior. Her princess pajamas also illustrate some aspect of children’s culture because the enormous influences from Disney’s princess characters set up expectations for how young girls should act. In this case, Cinderella leads some example of how the little girl in the photo should act through body image, style, dating scripts, as well as sexuality. The little girl in the photo only wears Disney princess clothing because it is what her parents believe is most “appropriate” for her gender in regards to developing her femininity.

I like the comparison of how although Cinderalla is not a dancer the little girl still is a fan of hers because of her feminiety. Maybe the little girls feels that Cinderalla measures up to the standards of how a ballerina should look, her appearance fits in what the little girl sees daily and what is called beautiful so the little girl has a lot of interest in her. Also the life long dream of this little girl is probably from society to. I agree with the influence of parents to, parents have a great influence on children in there gender socialization, Mostly because that's how their parents raised them so they will do the same and maybe just protecting their kids from criticism of their child goes against the norms it's a great deal of consequences.
