Under Pressure

From: Katelyn

Gender socialization today is very much impacted by social media, especially tabloids. The pressures are evident in almost any advertisement. Girls grow up looking at magazines like “Glamour” or “Seventeen” magazine and are influenced mostly by the pictures or ads throughout. There are usually words or phrases that stand out that give very straightforward impressions to the reader. In magazines directed towards females, there are many articles and pictures about beauty, what is sexy and things guys might approve of.
On the other hand, boys often look at more masculine magazines like “Men’s Health” or “Maxim” magazine. These tend to teach boys about how to be the strongest or toughest. Also, for example, magazines like “Maxim” show women as more of an object to men which can play into adulthood scenarios. These pictures make it pretty obvious that they are targeting a specific audience. The differences between male and female magazines are clear which is why they are very influential to the younger audiences. The colors in men’s magazines are dark and masculine like black, blues, greens or reds. There are many ads for tools, trucks and working out. Women’s magazines have a lot of pastel colors like pinks and purples and most ads are for makeup, skincare and style.
It is very easy to see that the younger generation is influenced by the media today because it is everywhere.
