Pressured To Be Beautiful

From: Jayla

My photo expresses the major measures of what women have to go through in today’s society in order to be the definition of beauty. Coming up, I was always sitting in the bathroom while my mom got ready for work wondering how she made herself so beautiful. Even looking at TV shows and magazines made me wonder why and how women had pretty skin, along with such flawless beautiful hair. As I got older I was told make-up didn’t make me pretty but, I always felt pressured by society because they made make-up seem to hide flaws. As you see, I’m looking in the mirror trying to perfect myself and hide my flaws that aren’t so comfortable with in. Using these products are a lifesaver to females who feel uncomfortable within their skin and with make-up and other hair products any female can be beautiful.

All of the makeup in the picture suggest that people go over board in trying to keep up with societies expectations. Women will change their body in so many ways to appeal other people when they aren't happy. Many women apply makeup to attract men. But also to feel better about themselves. Women try to look like people from magazines and movies because society paints the picture that if you aren't slim, thin, pretty, and wear makeup that you are not beautiful.

I thought the picture presented a major flaw that we have in our society. That fact that there is makeup placed all over the sink, nearly swallowing it whole, in my opinion represents how makeup and “beauty” products cover up our true selves, and devourer us until there is no way out. I also liked how the light in the picture was focused on the makeup, and not on you. For me, that shows how society highlights beauty standards, and makes us feel that our natural beauty should be kept hidden. The use of multiple pictures explains the time that people spend to put their “faces” on, and shows how much time is wasted trying to become someone that we aren’t. I also felt that it was a good touch that she was looking back at herself in the mirror. We as a society are constantly looking in the mirror to make sure we look perfect, even though no one can truly achieve perfection. I do however disagree with your statement that “with makeup and other hair products any female can be beautiful”. Society may tell us this, but it by no mean is true. I feel that natural beauty is true beauty, and all of the beauty products that we use show that we don’t think we are good enough.

As women we tend to follow social norms; being that every day we almost “compete” with other women in a beauty contest. We watch television ads with all these well known stars (Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, and ect.) telling us about the new beauty products out for women to try. With the way society is built we tend to idolize such figures, making the products more appealing for us to use. Even in certain cultures, such as; the Asian culture, it is important to express and show beauty. As well as in movies (bridesmaids) women will not let a man see her without makeup. Our world revolves around beauty, and the bathroom vanity photograph illustrates that by how hard females tend to concentrate in the mirror to perfect their look and how many products are used to make females “beautiful” by the counter filled with all the products. The frame focuses more on the products than it does on the women featured in the multiple photographs; which therefore promotes and shows the overall importance of her makeup over the importance of her natural beauty.

While look at this picture, it really makes me feel a similar feeling I think most women have. We are so completely bombarded with beauty products and standards of beauty from the media, that I think sometimes we cannot even see through it.
I remember when I was a little girl, and then especially once I was a pre-teen my mom telling me that make up shouldn't change anything about you, it should just accent the already beautiful things about you. This is definitely not what mainstream media tells us. These days women are spending 2 hours getting ready, contouring their faces so that their noses look smaller… how wrong is that?
One of my favorite things about this photo is the way the sink is filled with products. It's great symbolism for beauty being something fleeting that can go down the drain as easily as water.

Personally this picture speaks volumes. Girls in our society where an abundance of make up just to make sure they fit in and feel pretty. You really do not see a lot of girls now who do not cake their face with a lot of make up. Clearly, in the picture we can see all the make up that girls use and to me it is sad. Girls do not use their natural beauty anymore because they are told by society that make up is what is hot. The amount of time girls spend on "doing their face" is sad and could be spent on something else. I believe wearing your natural beauty should be the thing now it is true and it is you. With make up you are covering up all your flaws because of your insecurities. Yes, in my opinion make up is used to mask your insecurities. But today wearing make up is the new thing and if you do not wear make up you are not as beautiful as the girls who do.
