Distorted Image

from: Sydney

My photo is of a girl looking at herself in the mirror. Her backside takes up most of the frame to show her non-distorted version. She is playing with her hands to show how unsure she is about the way she looks through the mirror. She’s examining her outfit, her makeup, her choice of shoes and the way she styled her hair. Her face is blurred in the mirror to show that what she is looking at is a distorted version of herself that she is comparing to unrealistic model or actress. All of this shows the mixed feelings women feel when they look at their body and clothing choice. This is because they are told that everyone is beautiful and everyone should love themselves the way they are, but when they look through magazines and watch T.V., all they see are the same type of women that society categorized as beautiful.

I agree with this article society puts a lot of pressure on women and their physical appearance, not just body but also facial images. The girl in the picture seems to have more confidence than she thinks going against most of society rules that goes along with attractiveness. The girl has lose fitting covering clothes that we don't often see in magazines, in order to be appealing you have to wear tight, revealing, sexy clothes, by looking at her ourfit I would say she's confident and comfortable enough with her self in this manner. Also the girl has cut hair society's image of a beautiful woman usually has long flowing nice hair. For her to go against most of society standards of the perfect woman in my eyes she is bold, sure of herself and respects her self.

This picture does a really good job of portraying the distortion of the views on women in society today. The significance of the girl’s turned back could show how people in society turn their backs on women who do not look like a model or have the perfect body. I like that she is playing with her hands to show how unsure and nervous she is, showing how young and old women struggle with their body image and are so unsure of their beauty when they look at themselves in the mirror. The distorted image could also show how wrong and different people’s views of women are today. For example, the image of a model was what people judged upon, then some people believe women are expected to have nice curves, which is a big difference from the model figure, so which should women look like? This proves to show that rarely any body is ever perfect in this society. Women need to stop worrying about what others think and start to live more happily with their body image.
