This photo is of my two cousins, Jenny and Jasmine. Jenny, age 14, believe it or not is quite the tomboy and claims to “hate” dresses and all things “girly.” Jasmine, age 5, loves being girly and adores attention but acts coy around people who compliment her and when forced to communicate with others.
When I asked my little cousin what she wanted to do for her birthday she said that she wanted to do something fun like a tea party. This picture was taken at a dress up/party store at the mall, and yes they incorporated “tea time”. The employees of this store do the make up and have a huge closet full of dresses and gowns available to their young patrons. The store was clearly and strictly directed towards girls.
The subjects, my cousins, really pop out against the dull and black background, which has the sole word ‘Diva’ on it. A word that has a couple different connotations concerning females, such as how some girls are referred to divas when being temperamental or when a little girl wants to grow up to be superstar, aka a diva. The ladies who worked their during the “Fashion show” told my cousins to walk down the runway with attitude and sass, told them to be divas. In this part of girl world, females have to be like divas. But what the subject-and-background contrast could also symbolize is how women are supposed to be pretty and eye grabbing at all times. This is especially evident through Jenny. When presented with the opportunity to “beautify” herself, she quickly followed along and enjoyed herself more than Jasmine, who played coy and was a bit reserved the entire time.
The way Jenny holds up Jasmine’s smile for the picture, despite Jasmine not even wanting to take the picture, shows how it’s older people who are around the most establish etiquette and mannerisms on the young. How a lady should always smile, how a lady should follow directions like taking a picture, and how a lady should be grateful when given a gift or done a favor like a girl’s day out.

Diva is the female version of a Hustler
When I look at this picture, it reminds me if a big sister playing dress up with the little sister. Usually it is the young sister who wants to play dress up in their big sisters clothes, however, in this picture, it is the older sister having the most fun. The diva word in the back of the room is what the older sister is trying to portray. She has her low cut top on with her leopard skirt, and bling necklace on. The bright flowery scarf symbolizes that she wants to be seen. The little girl is dressed completely opposite in a full body covered princess dress. This cover up is in contradiction to societies normal copycat of the older sibling syndrome. In fact, the little sister us clutching her chest as if she is covering her cleavage, as shown by the big sister. She is being forced to smile for the cancers, even though she does not want to.
