In our society we let designers set impossible ideals for our children in terms of what size should be. Walking through the mall with my friend and her daughter we passed several of these stores. They show women that have been photo shopped, starved and otherwise altered to fit into these clothing items. Looking at these shirts I realized just how horrible of a message they were giving to this child. That we were telling her that the only way to be desirable is to be thin and almost unclothed.
The store we stopped in front of had a picture of a woman pretty much naked with a “come get me” look on her face. As I stood behind my friend to take the picture I noticed just how bizarre it was to expect woman to fit into this ideal. My friend’s daughter is a very thin 11 year old. My friend is a large woman who makes no excuses for it, even though she battles with poly cystic ovaries. Her daughter stared at the clothes that barely covered the mannequins and asked if people actually wore these items.
This picture shows the contrast between how people really are and what society wants them to be. Women need to be objects of desire, and in order for that to happen they need to be thin, tan, and firm. It shows girls that if they wear tops that barely cover their chest that they too can be popular and attractive.

When viewing this photo, I got a sense of reality. I say this because this situation is something seen far too often. It is of a mother and daughter on a shopping trip, unfailingly seeing the idolizing of these impossibly perfect models and all the flimsy clothing items made to fit one type of body. A mother’s instinct and love for her child makes her feel the need to let her daughter know that she is beautiful and to not be insecure. However, in this picture the mother looks just as mesmerized as her daughter is when looking at this model in the advertisement and the tiny clothes for young women. The fact that they are both faceless leaves them without an identity and to only be identified as their body types, which do not fit the only fully seen image of the model here. This photo does a great job depicting that society’s standards can influence a person whether they are a young girl or a grown adult.
