What Do You See?

From: Kayla
What exactly is beauty? How do we define it? Is it by the color of our eyes? The color of our skin? How long our hair is? What is beauty? Everyday more than a million girls struggle with what they believe beauty truly is. So every morning most girls wake up and paint a beautiful picture on their already perfect canvas looking to enhance certain aspects. Such as making their eyelashes longer, lips fuller, skin smoother, nose smaller. When you look in the mirror what do you see?
In the following picture the camera is angled so that the viewer sees the reflection, just as the model does. The camera is not directly angled to her face instead it shows her in action doing her makeup so the viewer can see the process she goes through. There is a variety of makeup from lipstick to highlighter. The makeup represents the steps she must take in order to look perfect, it is laid out so she can see exactly what she needs to use next. The makeup is not in uniform rather it is chaotic but she is expected to enter society “put together” when the process of getting “put together” is all over the place. This also gives the viewer an idea of much she goes through to get the perfect look. In addition, part of the picture is in black and white to prove that no matter what you do beauty in this society is black or white. Meaning you are ether pretty in the eyes of society and meet the standards or you don’t. The reflection of the model is in color, this symbolizes what she sees as acceptable and the beauty standard of society. But her actual self still remains black and white because once she leaves the mirror, she is still judged on rather or not she meets the standards. She is also leaning towards the mirror with her back slightly arched and butt slightly up to appear to herself as sexy. The red lips show boldness and sex appeal. Being sexy is a trend for many teenage girls these days being sexy often captures the attention of others which she is seeking . Moreover, the color of the room is gender mutual being a neutral green color with gold accents but the bedding is a girl’s bedroom set. The room used to be a guest bedroom but was converted to a room for a teenage girl hence the decorative bedding. The room is neatly kept which is expected of a girl to always have a clean perfect room. She keeps up with the room just as she does herself. Again the room in the reflection is in color because that is perfect in her eyes. But the actual color of the room is in black and white because there will always be some type of flaw in someone’s eyes.
So the remaining question is what do you see? Do you see black and white or do you see color? When will good be good enough.

This photo is slightly tilted as if to represent a balance which is tipped to the right. The model is on the right or the lower end and the makeup is on the left or the higher end symbolizing that the model is sacrificing herself  to be accepted in society. It is important to note all the artificial elements of the shot: the blue hair (which is not a natural hair color), the makeup, and the edited elements of the color change and the tilt shift of the photo. Also, the camera is angled so that we are looking down on the black and white model and  slightly looking up at the colored reflection, insinuating that the reflection is what all women should aspire to instead of being themselves.
