The Unrealistic Beauty Standards on Adolescent Girls

From: Nidhi

This picture is of my little sister, age 15, doing her makeup, and getting ready for a party she was going to later that evening. This image relates to the "Girl Culture" photo blog essay discussed in class. I chose this image because when I walked into the bathroom that day, I remember chuckling at the ridiculous amount of makeup/products she had on the counter. I jokingly asked her why she had so many different brands of lipstick, that were all the same color, and she instantly turns around and goes "Can you leave I'm trying to get pretty for this party!".  The second she said that my mind flashed back to my eighth grade self, I remebred being so frustrated as I would watch my friends effortlessly get dolled up to go to a party or even the mall. I remembered how insecure I always felt when I would be the only one not wearing makeup, and then when I started wearing makeup I remember the time I spent practicing, and perfecting it, to the point where I would cry if even one thing was not "perfect". I sat there, and watched my sister do her makeup, and as I watched her I realized that the standard for beauty when I was her age, and the standard for beauty for girls her age now, has not changed a bit. So, with her permission, I snapped a quick photo of her as she was doing the rest of her makeup. I kept her face in the image because the look of concentration on it reminded me a lot of my own experiences with makeup, and the unrealistic beauty standards society holds for young girls.
