Cooking vs Protection

From: Charles
In my picture I chose to show two examples of toys for boys and girls. One is a baby to with a cooking set the other is a nerf gun. Along with the toys are other objects that relate to them. Like a cook book and spatula and a badge and some handcuffs. The deal with this is to show how these toys can influence young kids and sway the way they grow up. The doll and cooking set are marketed to girls who are supposed to stay inside the house and play with dolls preparing them to be stay at home moms who are supposed to care for children and even cook and clean. The nerf gun is to show how boys are meant to show that boys are supposed to go outside and play a little bit rougher. As they get older and become men they are supposed to go out and protect their wives and other becoming police offers as this is an example. Even the general design of the toys enforces this with lighter tones showing up in the doll with pinks and baby blues where the boys nerf gun has darker even just natural colors. Boys end up playing with toys that are more masculine and have sharp edges and darker colors like black. Whereas girls play with toys that are soft and smooth. “boy toys are hard and sharp, whereas girl toys are soft and smooth” (bem,1991 Martin, 1999). This was proven further by changing the way a “girl” toy looked “by shaving the mane of (a soft girlish feature), painting it black and adding sharp teeth. Both girls and boys classified the altered pony as a boy's toy and most of the boys were extremally interested in obtaining one” (Hort & leinbach,1993, cited in Martin 1999). with the example here, boys are encouraged to go outside and shoot their friends or targets while the girls are to stay inside and make food and care for a doll. This could lead to the idea of men going out and working all day and come home to a wife taking pizza out of the oven and help a child with some homework.
