The Reality of Children

From: Susana

In the article “The“ Two Culture ”of Childhood,” the author explains that boys are separated
by society, boys with boys and girls with girls. each sex has different styles of activities and
in this way they create sexism among children they begin to have different upbringing that
only what is a boy is a boy and what is a girl is a girl. But is it the most correct for children?
Be separated and segregated by classifying your objects? In the article we are taught that
children learn the gender of shame from their social environment, this means that the parents
or the people who teach them have these same thoughts or characteristics. If the child plays
with weapons, to be a military man, with cars and trucks, the child in the future will be a
strong and honest man for his family, but if the child plays with dolls or with being a chef,
the child already becomes a weak person or of a different sexual gender. In my photo it is
perceived that the boy's side is a strong military man, who carries a weapon and instead the
girl's side is weak, a little princess who has to be rescued. I chose this topic in my Module 5
because I think that today there are parents or guardians of children who still think the same
as children have to be separated by society, such as in the snow white film and the seven
dwarfs, she She is a character who, when she finds the house of the dwarves, sees the house
messy and her "duty" as a woman is to clean the whole house, to be a loving person and to
cook like a housewife, she is a weak character, while the dwarves are strong workers. For this
reason I chose this photo to represent the content of the article “The“ Two Culture ”of
Childhood.” When editing my photo I wanted to place the soldier and it symbolizes an
expression of greatness and power, instead the princess symbolizes being weak with a tender
gaze and that is why I placed them small and they are divided by the separation of children
with different tastes children with soldiers, weapons, cars, with a blue background that
characterizes a boy, compared to girls who have makeup, kitchen, baby dolls, and with a
background with pink and purple tones that characterize the girl .

There is one subtle difference in this picture that I’m not sure if it was on purpose or if it was subconscious that I thought really made this picture’s message stronger. The boy subject of the picture is bigger and also overlapping the girl's picture, which is a perfect representation of what it feels like to be a girl in a very male oriented and rewarded world. I also found it interesting that for the boys picture, most of the toys you chose were based around the use of guns or war. In the documentary “Tough Guise 2”, they go in depth about how violence and war is often used as entertainment for young boys and could very well contribute to the male violence we see day to day, be it domestic violence or mass shootings. It’s very interesting how boys toys are intensely violent; who would think of letting young boys pretend they are in a war, an otherwise terrifying and very adult situation? The message of this picture is perfect for Module 5, as it very clearly shows the divide between boys and girls upbringings and how males toys and careers (such as a soldier) often outshine and are seen as more vital than a woman’s
(such as a stay at home mom). Great job!
