From Bonnie:
In “The Two Cultures of Childhood”, Laurie Rudman states, “according to the gender schema theory, children learn gender schemas from their social environments, but they also adopt and exaggerate distinctions between the sexes” (Rudman 59). Being a single mother of three daughters I tried to teach them that they could do anything they wanted. Do not let anyone tell you that you cannot do something because you are female.
I chose the picture of my daughter, in the white and black jersey, playing ice hockey. This picture reinforces Rudman’s thoughts of children learning from their environments. Allowing Jamie to do the things that brought her happiness, she was able to go against gender norms and play in a male dominated sport.
Rudman also state, “gender schemas associate maleness and femaleness with myriad different attributes, behaviors, and objects, defining masculine as rougher, tougher, and more active and feminine as nicer, softer, and more passive” (Rudman 60). I used the taking up space technique to show the power it takes to play a full contact sport and doing it on ice skates. By showing the girl’s faces the viewer can see the look of determination and competition. The viewer can also see the physical contact between the two females.
I also used camera angle and line techniques. By taking the picture on and angle and the yellow line in the background this represents them playing uphill. The lower side of the photo is the girls doing things they enjoy not caring what society thinks. The higher side is society’s gender norms and how society feels the girls should be acting. This technique represents the daily uphill battle which females face when they do not fall into the gender norms set by society. They want to do the things they enjoy and brings them happiness, but they also want to fit in with their peers and society. Do they continue with what they love and take the chance of being ridiculed and called names by their friends, or do they give in to society and conform to the gender schemes and gender norms set by the society in which they live?

Bonnie, you're truly an amazing mother! I agree with your ideology in letting the girls do whatever they want on their own term rather than allowing the society tell them what to do. I also think you captured a perfect timing where both players were enjoying what they were doing. That would make them stronger than the general.
