Introduction to the field of Women's Studies

This week the students are being introduced to some of the foundational beliefs of Women's Studies. We are looking at the difference between sex and gender and how these concepts work to classify and stratisfy our society. A basic premise of the class is that men and women have access to different types and amounts of power. However, it is important to recognize that race, class, ethnicity, sexuality and other types of difference also affect an individual's access to power.

This week we will also be looking at the meanings of feminism and how our understandings of feminism have been affected by stereotypes. In order to think about some of these stereotypes I asked the students to close their eyes and picture a feminist, and then to picture him or her doing something that makes them a feminist. After the students had a clear picture in their mind, I asked them to draw it and explain their drawing to the class. Here are some of their drawings:

We spoke in class Wednesday about Title IX , which states,"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."There were several points made about it, but the woman next to me wanted more information so I figured I'd post what it says and a helpful link or two. I found a website that may explain more for her, the url is http://bailiwick.lib.uiowa.edu/ge/. Hope that helps.

The thing I found most interesting about this class is that almost everyone drew a women protesting for women rights. The funny thing is when I went home and said something to my mom and my brother about picturing a feminist they too thought of a women protesting only my brother through in the fact that they are lesbians that hate men. This just helped me see how much men should take this course and learn about what it is before they began and add on to the sterotypes

After completing the reading and watching the movie on line I was slightly disappointed that I was not able to make tonights class and hear how everyone interpreted and brought all the material together. I did enjoy back to school night but I would have liked to come to class to hear what everyone had to say. I am looking forward to next weeks class and how this weeks reading will tie into the next. I'm still trying to figure out the whole womans studies/feminism stuff.

i know i just posted but i went back and looked at the pictures again and it is interesting to see that all woman are depicted. i have begun talking to my coworkers, mainly men. 4 direct coworkers, 1 indirect, 4 managers who are all men and only one other female in the office. After doing some of the readings I have talked with them and my husband, I have to say I have been fortunate to not have run into to much discrination because I am woman. I don't feel I am paid any less, if anything I have received more compensation because I have done more and put my self out there more. I do have jokes about being the mother of the office. the nagging and such but mostly it has been support. I nursed both my children and only once remember being told that I should be at home raising my children. the interesting fact was that this guy didn't know I was nursing and I had been working with him for 5 months. Show that just because you are a woman and take care of your children that you can have a good balance.

I have also as brittany did ask coworkers as well as my husband what they viewed as a feminist and I have not gotten the same reaction. i have gotten questions but nothing really negative.

i am new to blogging so my thoughts are jumbled, sorry for that.

I regret missing the first class. I was torturing myself with algebra and decided to drop that class and take this one at the last moment. I see that you all might of introduced yourselves, so I would like to take this opportunity. I started taking classes 1977 and finally am near completed. I had a family to raise and a business to run. I am a house painter because of the shear love of it. But as the years go by, I worry that I will not be able to climb a ladder when I’m 80. I’m continuing my education in the field of phychology. I would like to study the minds of Serial Killers, or council troubled girls.
