Michael Vick was made into an example, in my opinion. No one in the NFL or any major league sports team, to my knowledge, has ever been accused of abuse towards animals. The reason this is making the frontpage now is because the media has nothing else to go on currently. The war is getting old. Gang violence, who cares? Domestic violence, seems every major athlete does that, but they play a great game.A novelty in the news is bound to boost ratings and sell papers. As opposed to a case of domestic violence that is in and out of the headlines in less then a week. Also with the backing of PETA, who is renound for making a scene, is costing sponsors loads of money. If the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence made as big of a scene as PETA maybe those cases would be on the nightly news. Whatever the case I feel that it's not responsible journalism or management ( on the NFL's part) to not have stricter guidelines for domestic abuse.
After reading this article, I feel completely ignorant as to what goes on in the professional sports world. I had no idea that it was so common for professional male athletes to be convicted of domestic violence. I completely agree with the author that it is disgusting how an athlete can beat a woman and it goes unnoticed, but once he abuses a dog it is a huge media production. Don't get me wrong, I do not condone animal abuse by any means but there is no way that a dog's life is more important that a woman's. I feel like society accepts spousal abuse as a norm, or maybe that it really doesn't happen that often. I think another reason for society's lack of interest in these matters is that they feel it is the victims responsibilty to find help and maybe they feel the victim must be at fault. No one deserves to be physically, emotionally, or verbally abused and every victim deserves help and awareness.
I would have to agree with brandy. The war is getting to be old news even though it's important news. Michael Vick is a well-known football player and will def. boost sales of newspapers and tv reportings. I hate to say it but some people feed on gosip and thats why this issue is so popular to the public. As well, Vick has had many mishaps throughout his football fame including supesions for un-sportsmen like conduct and this issue just feeds or the previous endevors. The NFL should be more strick on their players because many younger teens and kids look up to them as idols.
Good point, JMartin. I didn't even consider that children were seeing the players as role models. I'd hate to see what today's youth is going to grow up to be like considering their role models are making it socially acceptable to commit such acts of violence.
I agree with tbgogolinski. I had no idea that so many male athletes were convicted of domestic abuse.
It makes me sick that these are the people everyone looks up to- people who beat on animals and beat on their wives.
I don't want my younger brothers/cousins/godson looking up to these people if this is how they act. If this is how their role models behave (and this also goes for Lindsay Lohan, and all those other Hollywood people), then what does that tell children? That its okay to beat on animals or people, or to smoke, or to drink, or to do drugs?
My brother found a poster from The Simpsons Movie that had this quote on it:
"If you have sympathy for a poor, dumb animal, it doesn't matter how you treat people."
I guess that kinda summarizes whats going on with Vick.
There is a question of why other nfl players are not facing the public outrage... I think that it is good that Michael Vick is having this much negative publicity because maybe now when anything else happens like domestic violence with a nfl player it hopfully would get the negative publicity. Everyone tried to keep it hidden before but now look at Vick, his case is not hidden and maybe from now on everyone elses wont be either.
As a close follower of professional football, I too have never heard of athletes beating their wives.
As far as Michael Vick is concerned he is a major superstar in the sport and like it has been stated before, he is being used as an example for other people. Dog fighting hasn't been this exposed as long as I can remember. I've lost all respect for Michael Vick for what he's done and I would definitely lose all respect for any player exposed for such accusations.
But an to answer the question of why domestic violence hasn't been this talked about within the media fails me. It's definitely a serious subject and just like the Michael Vick situation, it deserves serious attention.
My thoughts on why players are not getting in the same trouble for beating their wives is that it is not in the news as much. The wives might not want to expose themselves in front of the media. The animals don't have a choice. It might be possible that someone could think a wife could defend herself and leave an unhealty relationship but the animal doesn't have a choice. I think that is a reason it angers people so much. Would it be different if he only beat/killed one animal?
I just wanted to let you know that not every parent lets their children become consumed with admiration of an athlete or superstar. It frightens me that if I as a parent don't have my eyes open all the time then my children could catch the latest incident of someone making a bad choice. I have to be honest with my children when we do watch the news together. I tell them that the girl who was in one of their movies has now grown up and has decided to get behind the wheel after drinking. With the mistakes that these people make we make better decisions, I use their examples so they don't go down the same path. Someone will always make a bad choice it is up to us to learn from it and move foward not backwards.
I would have to agree with Lizzet. I am very fortunate that my daughter, who started sixth grade this year, does not idolize brittany, linsey, paris or any other actress "gone bad". And yes our society, as sad as it is, thrives and feeds off negativity. We try to not watch the news while my daughter or son are in the room for the same reason of having to explain why this nfl player is on trial, why this actress is going or not going to jail. explaining choices to an eleven year old can be challenging enough with out the sports players, pop stars, actress and actors out there spraying this "ideal" way to be. when in reality they are human. capable of making a choice good or bad. I can only hope with lizzet that i empower my daughter to make choices that better her. I am lucky her "idol" or hero is her pediatrician. Why? because he helps people. He makes people better that is what she wants to do when she grows up. I will do my best to keep him and his wife (his nurse) as her idols for a long time. And when my son, who is only three, starts to see the players I will do my best to keep him as grounded as my daughter.
How old is this? What Michael Vick, did was wrong, and I agree. But he also knows it was wrong. Why is the media still on his case? Dog fighting is wrong in all sort if ways. But most dogs are trainned to attack. My dogs are trannied to attack when they see a threat. So will I get in trouble if my dog is fighting as well? Other people besides Michael Vick have been accused of dog fighting. So why is he being put out in the open. That's not fair. And I'm not just saying that as a four year fan of the Atlanta Falcons. (The best team alive)What about the other athlete's who are accused of different troubles. Allen Iverson was accused of beating his wife and running her out the house. He was let off on that. And R.Kelly, his child pornography case has yet to be settled. He is till out making songs and selling CD's. The medis just needs to leave Vick alone and find something else new to talk about.
I really don't like how the media is blowing this subject out of proportion. I understand that dog fighting is a crime and is animal cruelty, but there are other things that go on that deserve more attention. Personally, I think because he's black and excels in football they are going to try to bring him down.Look at all the athlethes who have raped females and don't get as much attention as Vick did. It does upset me to know that he was doing that. But hey, I know that how things go and this is just another case that makes people talk.KUDOS:tbgoglinski
Why isn’t they’re more of an outcry to spousal abuse? It’s sad to say, but it seems to be too much of a common place. Its degree of offensiveness is lowered by their standards! People can scream out louder without consequence to something they are not guilty of. If they are downright or to some degree guilty of abuse themselves, their outcry is more silent due to fear. Fear that their own behaviors could be exposed.
Michale vick was only punished the way he was because he was caught red handed and than the NFL had no choice but to punish him because he than made it a footballthing. Other players that beat their wifes are not making it public and are not bringing it on the feild like Vick was. What a man or women does on his own is not the problem of the NFL, so they are not going to care. Also with what Brandy says, it seems all the good athletes do commit someform of domestic violecne but they play a hell of a game, so its okay.

I'm Disgusted by Michael Vick as if "we" already dont have enough worries i guess he felt that if ever get caught he'd get a slap on the writs!!
even though he finally admitted to it. He should be punished like any other person because thats just pure evil.
