Privilege and Social Location

I have asked you all to think about your own privilege in order to write your first papers on social location. Finally a Feminism 101 Blog talks about privilege and what people can do about it. What do you think is the most effective way to get the privileged group (in terms of race, class, gender, sexuality, etc.) to see their advantages? How should we deal with people's natural defensiveness?

I think that if I could answer this post with an attainable goal, to make people relize what privilages they have, I would be eligible for the Nobel Peace Prize. There is not one clean cut way for anyone to realize that they are in a privileged group and what that means in terms of the way others are treated.

don't really know where to begin since I struggled with this. I don't believe society as a whole realize there social location or even that they are a priviledged group. What about the white females int he upper class, such as actoresses and singers. What about the black football players that make thousands and millions are they priviledge? if not why, because of their race. They have more priviledges than I do because of their status and money. I am not sure of a way to change this since it is not something that is talked about, taught (at least I hope not), or sometimes even understood. maybe if we looked at each of us as humans instead of labels we can get a start. but unfortunalty that is not how our HUMAN "Race" behaves, sad to say.

TO me i think their arent many ways to help the privileged group see their advantages simply because it is most likely always taken advantage of..........for instance i feel as though the privileged group assume they have it made and do not think they have to struggle to much to get as far because theirs probably a limited amount of troubles in their life but if it were to be a less privileged person such as maybe a low class, gay, interatial, man he might go through more struggles in life through trying to find were he would most fit in the society and would appriciate it more due to the fact he worked so hard to achieve his goal.

so i think the upper class males have it made for them. the ones who do not fall in this category are still pretty fortunate. Just becasue you don't fall into one catergory doesn't mean your life is over. just because you are a black female in a lower class doesn't mean you can't go to college their are plenty of colored women that go to college and become very successfull that were born and raised in a lower class situation. Making people realize this just means that we need better role models and not to stress about that bad but point outs what good.

Man thats tough, I mean in reality, you cant take an entire group of people and set them in another setting. The main reason people will always be the way they will be is because man as a group is incontrollable, but the individual is. You can take people and set them in new places to see how life isnt always that tough/easy. IN terms of having people see their advantages... People that are on top, i think believe that they deserve to be on top. Its hard to see how you are not high and mighty when you leave your Beverly Hills Mansion, drive your Porsche to work, and sit at a desk in front of a bunch of board members who kiss your ass. You see this everyday in terms of movie/music stars. Thata why all these child starts go nuts, after hearing from everyone all the time that you are great, you truly start to believe that you are great, and then in turn think you are better. People that are on the opposite side of the spectrum can see their set backs everyday. If you are surrounded in bad situations everyday, its easy to know ho unfortunate you are.
