The Age of Innocence

from: Ashley

The picture I chose for this assignment was the one of my niece in a green and white jumper with a hat to match. I picked this particular photo because it shows the age of innocence and how at this age children don't really know what it is to be a boy or a girl. In a reading from the book called "Gender and Children's Clothing" it talks about how boys should wear colors like blue and girls should wear pink and thats the way society distinguishes boys and girls from one another. A lot of times people mistake my niece for a boy no matter what she has on, thats the reason why I picked this picture. In this picture she also has her ears pierced but because the outfit is so bright and she has a hat to match it, it is hard to pay any attention to the indicating factor that she is a girl by her earrings. There is the part of society that chooses to stick to the same old boys wear blue and girls wear pink to help make the distinction. Then there are the people in this society that pick neutral colors because of reasons like not knowing what the sex of the baby is or not wanting to be so stuck in society's rules. Another reason that they don't get stuck in the color scheme of children is because like my sister they don't like the colors like pink and purple and they know that it is okay to have other options. In my opinion kids don't really know what is going on in and around the world so when raising a child thinking outside the box is not a bad thing.

Your right, I didn’t notice the earring. Just the same that strangers didn’t see the white eyelet trim on my six month old daughter’s light blue snowsuit. They would always refer to her as a boy. She also didn’t have any length to her hair, which added to the gender categorizing. All they saw was light blue and short hair and labeled her a boy. A year later, I did have her ears pierced because her hair wasn’t growing fast enough:)
