When I went around taking photos I had the main concept of capturing a picture of something that seemed outside the norm of society. As you can see in the photo that is just what I did when I took a picture of a male employee in a hair salon, what most people think is that only women work in them. Statistically speaking in the work field of beauty shops. You would see that most shops have the female majority, but another stereotype is that if it’s not women working in beauty shops it’s gay men. Which is also partially true statistically speaking. But as you could see in my picture the man doesn’t really look gay. When I was there I didn’t ask if the man if he was or wasn’t gay I merely explained to him that he broke the stereotype. I didn’t ask him about his sexually preference because I want the people who view this picture to decide if they believe the man is gay or not.

The topic you chose was very interesting and I very much liked the theme you used of “breaking the stereotype”. You stated, “You would see that most shops have the female majority, but another stereotype is that if it’s not women working in beauty shops it’s gay men”. I work in a hair school and the majority, all but one, enrolled in the school is female and the one boy who is enrolled is a homosexual so I can personally agree since I witness this stereotype daily. However, in your blog you also state, “as you could see in my picture the man doesn’t really look gay” and “I didn’t ask him about his sexual preference because I want the people who view this picture to decide if they believe the man is gay or not”. I find these statements rather ironic though considering you are writing an assignment about stereotypes and those are a couple of severally stereotypical statements you made. The media presents homosexuals as “feminine” and dressing and acting a certain way while in reality a large part of the gay community could not be told apart from the heterosexuals in their physical appearance. There is no way I could tell whether this man is homosexual or not just by looking at him and it is extremely stereotypical to assume you could do so. What you see in the media regarding the way homosexuals act or dress creates a false perception of what gay really is. Being gay only means you are sexually attracted to the same sex and it has nothing to do with what you look like.
