Based on the color of the icing on this shower cake and its form, most would guess a girl. This mother-to-be, who requested this cake, knew she was going to have a girl through an ultrasound picture. Because of the mass use of ultrasound images, we are able to be gender specific even before the infant is born. Have you ever asked parents-to-be before the due time of their ultrasound, whether they were hoping for a boy or girl? So often they say, “It doesn’t matter, as long as it’s healthy”. These are the same parents that get really gender specific when decorating the nursery. Some popular themes are safari and sugar plum fairies. The verbal messages to these themes go with the old nursery rhyme, “frogs and snails and puppy dog tails….sugar and spice and everything nice…”. It’s the same as saying, “mud and slime and grime…sweet and fine and kind…”. Children grow up with gender typed cognitive thinking about themselves or others because of the gender typed messages in their own rooms. To most parents, it does matter if it’s a boy or girl.

haha...that cake is great, i actually laughed to myself in total confusion. I really had no idea. I assumed girl because of the butterfly but the colors threw me off. That makes me wonder if a child would play with anything if the colors were right. Would a little girl be happy about a cake of a dragon, as long as it was cute and pink? Would a boy be happy with the Barbie vet if it was blue? hmmm.... I think the sayings are interesting, are we teaching our children that boys are gross and girls are clean? I think it does matter if children are seperated in ot boys or girl categories, i want both.
