A Losing Battle

from: Joe

I believe in society today that women are forced to try and appear as they are portrayed in the media. All you see now-a-days on the media and in magazines are fake women portraying "real" beauty. One has to remember that those pictures are also partially computer generated and air brushed to perfection, especially in the magazines. Young women see this and think that's how they have to be. So the young girls and women strive and do everything in their power to look like their fake counterparts. I believe that people are going to look the way they look. Everyone is different and unique and should embrace their own special qualities. One should be happy with the way they look, and not sub come to the lies that the media vomits everyday. But the media makes this damn near impossible. Coming from a mans perspective, I guess it is easier said than done. I know for a fact that men do not have the same pressure as women do about their appearance. Everyone is beautiful in their own way and they should do what they feel is right by them.

I really agree with Joe about his depiction of what “real beauty” in our society is today. It is true there is so much pressure from the media and society as a whole to look beautiful no matter what the risks are that are involved in it. It’s so sad that young girls have to been raised up into this so called “normal” way your body should look and not be their selves. He is also right is saying that men do not have e this type of pressure on them growing up, but I do think however when they hit the teenage years that all changes, then boys want to change their body image to get a flatter stomach, six pack abs and huge muscles. It is so sad that this is what our world had become, there is so much more to focus on in the world and so many other important things in the world to worry about other than what one person looks like to the next. If society would put more emphasis on brains and intelligence and talents this world would be a better place and our growing generations would then grown into a healthy environment.

Let's start an advertising company or a political lobby hell-bent on changing this "ideal" body type into a more realistic one which won't give little girls anorexia in their abs and "big"orexia in their breasts, shall we? Perhaps it is easier said than done.

But seriously, it needs to happen... like yesterday.

Being a girl, I understand that when you go out somewhere you want to look nice and not be seen looking "rough" or "unkept", but just because you dont have makeup on does not mean you can not go out and have a good time. Looking at maganizes and seeing these models with their nice bodies does make you want to look like them, but girls do not understand that that is not really what the model look like. They have been touched up and if you took off all the makeup that the models wear they will look like just a normal person like everyone else.

I agree! I have a lot of feelings and options about this picture that was posted. Society excepts women in general to always look what they think is "beautiful". Beautiful to society, i feel, is long shinny beautiful hair, clean skin, makeup, nails/toes done, a great body (thin or tone). If you do not have all this features society will put you into a group and to a young adult it could damage them inside and out. I personally did not starting applying makeup until I was in my sophomore year of high school, I never really got into it. I never had patience to do it i like to be quick when going somewhere. I always think men have it so much easier them we do. It takes them one quarter of the time to get ready in the morning than us women.

I believe too that there is a lot of expectations put upon women to look and be a certain way that only makes it harder to be the real self they really should be. From my view point this can cause a person to get lost in the image that she puts on a mask to cover her insecurities of who she is my adding more makeup or trying to lose more weight. The insecurity of wanting to be accepted by her peers causes her to get caught up in her appearance and this is why they become anorexic or bulimic. I guess it is the awareness of feeling empty inside and maybe not loving who they are and accepting themselves either.

Joe's right. Being a girl growing up in society is pretty much damn near impossible to look like the super models on television or in magazines. We are completely manipulated by what we see. I do not think that there is one girl that actually wants to spend all of her time consumed with trying to look a certain way. I do not think that there is one girl who wants to starve herself or make herself vomit to look a certain way. And I certainly do not think there is one girl who really wants to spend every last dollar she has on clothes, purses, make-up, hair products, hair do's, etc... But we feel as if we have to because if we don't than what boy is ever going to like us? I mean it is pretty much put in every little girls head that you either need to be this or that, or your not worth anything. This explains our reasoning for self-destruction. It is really really hard out there, and it is incredibly sad that it is the way it is, and I just wish things could be different. There is way too much pressure on young adults. We have more to worry about then our appearance and if only that could be manipulated into our brains things could maybe change ...

first off, thank god i am not the only guy in womens studies this semester.

But yea i agree with Joe. I am tired of hearing girls complain that they dont have big of boobs, or a bigger butt, or flatter abs, or straight enough hair. Look women, you are all beautiful so stop worrying about it. I mean if you want proof that anyone can be beautiful on a magazine cover, look at Brittany Spears. We all know she is fat, bald, cant sing, blah blah blah. But on a magazine cover, she is hott?! I can tell you, Photoshop works wonders. If it can make Brittany look hott now, that should say something. Also ladies, you have to remember, that anybody can look beautiful if they were in hair and makeup for 3 hours, on a beach in Tahiti, by the best stylists in the world ok...People do not look like that on a regular basis. Jessica Alba is not that hot when she is watching a movie in her house. Its all fake, so relax...I'd take a girl with physical flaws over a girl with mental ones...and i think most guys would agree.
