Dreamworlds and the Construction of Masculinity

Sut Jhally, the creator of the film Dreamworlds 3, wants to connect violence against women to images of women in the media. Here is a link to a recent court case involving teenage boys. What do you think Sut Jhally would say about this case?

Sut Jhally had made a very good point that music videos make it seem ok to force women into doing things they do not want to do and make violent acts towards them. This seem like the case here, young teenage boys who probably watch MTV forced a girl to do sexual acts and urinated on her, this is something that would seem like it would come from an MTV music video. Sut Jhally would say the video probably influenced the boys in some way or another. I think the boys should have served some time in the youth detention center to see how bad it is there so they can imagine how bad it really is in prison so they wont comit any more crimes as they get older.

Sut Jhally would probably say that situations like this are often seen in music videos as "ok" or "fun." The music videos more often then not show the guys getting all the attention from the girls and showing that the girls like it when the guys approach them wanting sexual acts or force them to do stuff. Also, they show girls saying no but that no ends up being a yes. The whole time i read about the case it reminded me of the part of the video when they showed the attacks in Central Park and incorporated the images from the music videos to show how similar they look. I'm almost certain it could be done here. But that doesn't mean they should be let off. If the boy's could get away with this then what is that telling other guys? i feel like something more should've been done especially since they're so young. This is very disturbing.

Sut Jhally probably would have related this incident to the many music videos on tv that show women being forced to perform the same kind of acts against there will. In most music videos of this nature these violent acts are seen as acceptable therefore, many young men may see them and think that is acceptable for them to do the same thing.
Although it is easy to connect what these young men may have been watching on tv to the acts that they forced this young woman to do, that does not excuse them from what they did.

Sut Jhally would say that this case was definately influenced by music videos. In a lot of the vidoes we watched in Dreamworlds they showed aggressiveness towards females, with more than one guy ganging up on a girl, expecting them not to mind. Even though in reality since this would be a girl's worst nightmare, then boys know this but since this image sinks in their minds they continue the harrassment. Its a shame the boys didn't get a harsher punishment.

Spelling the F-word along with letters and symbols has the same impact of offensiveness. Offensive language is a verbal attack. If you are trying to lessen the blow, it didn’t work. This site is required reading for our college class. It’s not like we can choose not to read it. Had it of been used in the story of the attack, coming from the attackers, I would have expected it.

I really liked this movie. He really made good points about how boys in gemeral are leaving things from music videos and tv. They probely sit their and watch Mtv and all the stupied shows like " Pimp my Ride" or parental control. As well, all the mosic videos that objectify women which creates a pictures in the viwer head on a concious and sud-consicous level that it is ok! Tis all leads to less respect for people and women and crime. Just imangin it!

I have read a lot of responses and saw MTV as what the boys might have watched to get ideas of violence but what I wonder is what if they didn't. I think that would scare me more, if they didn't get those violent images and they thought of this violent crime all on their own I think society would suffer greatly. I hope they get rehabilitated but what does the victim get? The judge made sure they could go and get "better" and learn from their mistakes but again where does the victim go to get "better"? Will someone in a few months check up on her or will she all forgotton along with the crime the boys committed? This is not justice!

Sut Jhally would have probably said it one of THOSE DREAMWORLD FANTASIES, but common this it!! they got away!! well I think that is how it is when comes with respect and equality. Like Sut Jhally said these music videos are one of the contributing factors on showing violence to the women as if it is a fantasy. Forcing women to spread legs on the table and them show act of violence, girls showing s if they like it, and even though when they say no it meant as to be YES. THIS IS FRUSTRATING

What the F*&%?!?!?! They got off?! probation?! thats a joke!! They off because they admitted to it, of course they did, they were filmed. I wonder how it would have turned out if it wasnt. That is incredible... that says a lot about the judiciary system.
I dont know how Sut Jhally would react to this and if he would try to relate it. If he did, he would probably say think that music videos teach boys that the more of you are, the more you are invincible. I think that contributes to it dramatically. But in my opinion, music video or not, you have be one F%$@! up individual to do that. The music video might have put them over the edge, but its their character that is capable of such horrible things.
