The Sexualization of Young Girls

In Killing Us Softly 3, Jean Kilbourne talks about the images of young girls in advertising. Sut Jhally talks about the use of "The Catholic Schoolgirl" in music videos. Both of them argue that the sexualization of girls has important consequences on how men and boys see girls, and how girls see themselves. A new study by the American Psychological Association shows that sexualized images of girls and women hurt girls' self esteem. VH1 has a new show about beauty pageants for girls. Is this the same thing?

About this show that is out or coming, it is completley proving what the people had to say about making the girls feel insecure or dropping their self esteems. It is making these little girls at such a younge age think that they must look like the girls in magazines that deal with exotic models, or just makes them feel like they should be flawless. These little girls are being brought into a world where they are being forced to keep up with the "In crowd" when dealing with these models. The problem occurs when these girls hit puberty and start to put on a little weight. This is a big stage most likely when they will feel ugly, or like they are not flawless.

Yes, I think it is exactly the same thing. These little girls are being made up to look like adults, which is showing the little girls that they have to wear make-up and style their hair to be beautiful. I think parents should let their children be children for as long as they can. I mean, My mom didn't let me wear make-up until I was 16. She also didn't let me start shaving my legs until I was 12. I must say, it was kind of nice not to have to worry about things like that at such a young age. Children are forced to grow up to fast now. Now, some parents want their 8-12 year olds to be little adults. They want them to think and act like adults. I think this is just too much on kids. It puts too much unneeded pressure on the children. I believe in letting my kids enjoy being kids. My 8 year old daughter doesn't ask to put on make-up and I don't encourage her to. I don't wear make-up and I don't think that make-up is what makes someone beautiful. The little girls in these pageants should be natural looking, with no make-up and no hairspray.

Oh My Goodness! they are little my size barbies running around! Their pictures look like computerized people. a 6 year old is not supposed to look like that at all. i cant believe that they have Fake teeth, Spray tans, etc. then they give them nicknames like "diva" and "flirt" does a 6yr old even know what flirting is? thats gross. They are being made into little barbie doll objects running around on stage doing tricks for everyone. This is exactly what the research was talking about. when these little girls grow up and hit puberty they arent going to know what hit them. theyre going to realize they have real bodies that are going to go through all the funky stages of puberty. thats going to be a real shock to them and they'll probably develop eating disorders and who knows what else. and who the hell puts fake teeth on a 6 yr old? last time i checked older people got dentures. Parading these little girls around at this age and fixing them up to be something theyre not is just telling them, before they actually develop, that theyre not good enough. I would not be ok with spraying a fake tan on a 6yr old if i was the person having to do it. The whole pagient is just about making them into this pretty little object. they dont care who that little girl is. they rate you on your looks for crying out loud! yea they have different parts like Talent and so on but during that they just dress them up even more and they dance around or something. They are treating them like little animals. when they do a cute trick or obey they get a treat, oh wait i mean a crown. the best part is when they say on the page that its an "American Tradtion".. enough said.

Yes, I would have to say that they are the same thing. The little girls are made up like there going to prom or something. In todays world younger girls feel that they have to be perfect they see the women on T.V. and in magazines and think that they have to look just like them but really those women are mainly airbrushed and don't really look like that.

I've seen the show a few times and I couldn't help but noticce how some of the mothers said..."we won". Hmm...makes you think who really want's it more. Stage mothers who drag their kids there, spend thousands of dollars, and forsake other family members just to live out a dream through their child are just sad. Beauty pagents, "scholarship contestes", are crap! The irony I find in them is that often the most ugly people will enter themselves or their children into them( by ugly I mean internally). I just can't see myself introduceing to my child the idea that vanity will ultimately make you a winner. If my child want's to be in the limelight on their own accord, I'll introduce them to an actual talent. Oversexualizing a child just for a chance at money and pride to be called the most beautiful is just ludacris, especially since beauty pagents base nothing actually on real beauty.

I feel that how you are brough up is the most important thing that develops you as an individual pshcially, mentally, socially and intulectualy. It is crazy how movies, shows, and ,magizines are illustrating young women and women in general as ogjects. In reture, an odject is a thing and women are not thing, they are hummans. It make these young girls have lowered self-esteme because they feel they have to look like the "air" brushed women and teens in the magizines or the ones playhing in movies!

This show is exactly the same thing. More images of extrely beautiful women to make the rest of us feel bad. A girl is never happy about her body and the biggest reason why is because of these images that get flashed before them a hundred times a day. So if women are seeing these images a hundred times a day so are men creating men to be more harsh on juding women by appearance not quality. Everyone is judged by appearance but now when you start making that your top priority than something is wrong.

Definitely they all are the same. It all about preparations for tomorrow. Making them be looked from the eyes of the men and be watched. These girls at such ayoung age, they don't have a slighest idea about a beauty image. It is more like as forcing those innocents to be like some one who they aren't and kill their self identity.

WOW!!!! I think people should call social services on their prarents because all i can say is that these girls are going to have messed up lives. Children need companionship, friendship, social situations with people her own age to be normal. By taking this away from them at such a young age, you are taking away the foundation that shapes their lives. You are just asking for them turn into the Michael Jackons, the Macully Culkins, the Drew Barrymores of the world. These parents have some serious issues for putting their kids into these types of things. These are the things that keep gender socializations around, These are the things that hurt kids, because you are taking their god given right to choose what they can do wth their life. Its sad, I feel sorry for them...
