Jessica's post on Feministing. She's angry about Michael Karolchyk and the commercial for his gym. What do you think? Is she making a big deal out of nothing? Do you think Karolchyk has the right to run his gym anyway he wants? How does this relate to women's self esteem in our society?

I think that this commercial is really amazing, not in a good or bad way, just amazing. I cant believe its allowed to TV. I dont know in terms of what I think of the commercial, I think whatever it takes for you to feel better about yourself, then do it. (as long as it isn't dangerous or harmful to your body) If someone wants to go through the abuse, then let them. Some people need drastic change and extreme amounts of motivation. I know that i am pretty lazy but would I want cup cakes thrown at me...I dont know. I think if people do join this gym, its important that these people know that the trainers are their to make them feel better for themselves in the long run. SO if they can handle it, and they want it that bad, then who am i to stop him. I mean people join up for that reason, so its not just an all out assault on fat people. In terms of womens self esteem, woman would have to have low self esteem to join this place. My girlfriend says that when people just talk to her when she is in ballet, its just words, but if its a big deal and they are yelling and upset about it, she is able to absorb it faster. I think some people might be tired of others telling them its ok and to work at their own pace. Maybe people know themselves and know that it takes someone to kick them in the ass to get motivated. As extreme as it is, it could possibly offer a more immediate response. It all depends on what kind of person you are and what you can take.
ok so basically this is the meat head, cock disel, my penis is to small because i take steroids "wanna be gym." this isnt a gym at all its a place you go to show off your "great bod." it sounds more like a petty club to me. the whole point to go to a gym is to get in shape, not to go after you are in shape. I know people that wont go to the gym because they say they will look stupid and they have to get in shape first. Soo, to go to a gym you have to be in shape first? How can you make fun of fat people when most of the country is "fat" i just want to shove a twinkie in this guys mouth.
Michael Karolchyk’s commercial for his gym should be an exasperation to all people. He is the perfect model of an egoistical maniac! If I’m going to label someone, I better know what it means. I did some reading on the ego from a book, Radical Forgiveness, Colin c. Tipping (pg. 77-78)
Michael Karolchyk’s ego exist as a deeply held set of beliefs about who he is in relation to moral values, which formed when he experimented with the thought of separation from love of mankind. This choice is repressed in the unconscious mind were he is spared the guilt. There is a fear that guilt might rise, so he developed a new belief-that the guilt lay with someone else rather then within himself-that he began projecting his guilt onto other people so he could be rid of it entirely.
“Chubbies” became his scapegoat. To insure that guilt stayed with them, he became angry with them and kept up his continuous attack on them. After attacking the people onto whom he projected his guilt, he feared them attacking him back, so he created a strong defense to protect himself and what he sees as his complete innocence. His strong defense the Anti-gym, with its false pretense of helping others.
What this guy did was extremely smart. He got everyones attention and now he's getting what he wants. People are going to go just to see how bad it is or if its really like this.what he does is a bit extreme and i know that i would probalby not be attending that gym but who know maybe some people need that type of motivation. Personal trainers are one of the easiest and hardest jobs because your either an ass or the best thing on two feet. Being a personal trainer not only requires you know the human body but the human spirit as well. some people need hard never stop annoying motivation to change to where others might just need a guidence. No doubt what he did or is doing is wrong and not the right way its his way and he has the right.
Ummm he def. got my attention. I agree with alcia that the gym should not be a place to show off your all ready hott BODY. The gym is a place for people who need to get that body and want to make a change in their life to be healthy. I mean you still go to the gym to keep in shape even if your body is good but some peolple take it to the extreme and i will emit since i put on that umm freshman like 30, not 15 last year when i went to Vila julie, I feel weird going and workin out in front of people who are all cut. In reture, I just dont care though because i wont to get my body back so those people can think what they want. But i do get where people and alicia is comming from.
I think that people should be able to run their businesses the way they want but they also have to take other people/feelings into consideration also.
I think that the commercial was very insensitive and he obviously didn't take anyone's feelings into consideration. However, everyone responds to these kind of messages differently and it just may have motivated some people to become more fit. I also feel that if his commercial is actually doing its job and getting him business then he has a right to air it.
