Girl Cars and Boy Cars?

Here is an article that talks about gender and car buying. What kinds of car commercials did you see on your male and female shows? Did it seem like the advertisements were geared towards one gender in particular?

While watching my T.V. shows I saw a pretty big difference in who the car companies were trying to sell to in terms of gender. Minivans, "safe" SUV's usually have women in the commericals driving their kids around, or running errands. Men are usually in the car commercials that have big trucks or race cars, usually doing dangerous stunts, or speedng.

While watching my commercials I realized that most of the car and truck advertisements were geared more toward men rather then women. The pickup trucks and cars with a lot of horsepower are targeted toward males as where SUV's and minvans are women so they can cart there family around.

I saw pretty much the same things as everyone else who commented did. They were all targeted to a certain gender. On my guy show there were big, strong trucks with guys saying how tough and durable it was. On my woman show there were minivans and little sedans and women saying how safe and fun it was for their kids or how comfortable and relaxing it was to drive in. This goes back to socialization. People assume all men should be strong so they have to get a strong car and women drive the kids around so they should have a safe car. I think's it's pretty safe to say that women and men drive both types.

I think that car commercials are definitly targeted to specific people. Television shows like Opera show all car commercials of mini vans stressing points like how safe and entertaining they can be for the kid or how many kids you can fit into this new van. They're appealing to women's sensible nature while guy shows such as football are showing commercials for sports cars with turbo's and huge trucks with all weel drive and huge tires. They're appealing to a mans desire to have hypermasculine things to compensate for things they are lacking.

Most of the time, I feel boys and girls have different taste in cars like the artical presents. For example, it states the stuff about the big powerfull horsepowered trucks. When I think about it, I know that about all of my guy friends drive big powerful trucks and I know no girls who drie trucks. Their is def. a gender bias. Hence, I dont know any guy who drives the sports cars my girlfriends drive. Cars like ecplises and colbots. Then again, they are also geared at age groups. Like minivane ads are amined at mothers. You never really see a dad driving a minivan.

When I was watching my shows the i only ever really saw car commercials on the "guy show" but when i did see car commercials on the "girl show" it was usually mini vans or cars" good for the family" Which showed me how women are looked at more to make a stable famliy enviroment. And guys are more going for sports cars and heavy duty cars.

While watching car commercial on a mans television show I saw most of the cars being trucks and Hummers the Macho cars. When I watched a female commercial I notice that the commercials for cars geared to minivans for mothers with kids and more cargo space for sports equiment and more grocery space.

I notice that mens commercials have car commercials that are geard to pick up trucks and lots of horsepower and macho cars. If advertisers put car commercial to the minivan that they would lose sales because men beleive minivans are for the women and children and the trucks are for the man and their horsepower. My friend has a truck what will society think of that?

As we all know commericals are geared towards a particular gender. Ecspecially the ones society say are either strictly male or female interest. Like cars certain cars are aimed at men more than women for examples trucks are almost always talking about the towing ability or the engine and vans are never ever talked about in this tye of fashion its always storgae and room. Why? because society says women drive vans and men drive trucks. Women drive vans becasue they are moms and care for kids where men do not have to worry about toting the kids around.

Commercials for everything are geared towards men and women. As I learned in the commercial analysis paper that vans and SUV's are sold to women by the commercials showing moms transporting a bunch of kids around but the commercials that sell sports cars to dads makes it seem like its a great single life for them and theyre out driving on the open road with no destination.

After just writing a research paper on this topic i am fully aware of gender stereotypes. I definitely agree that there are certain cars advertised to women and certain cars for men. Especially during televisions shows, the commercial ads in between Dr.Phil and Oprah show minivans and suvs for women. This is because it's believed that women are home during these afternoon hours (being a stay at home mom) and that women will buy these cars because they are the ones who take care of the children. I think its absurd. On the other hand, what gets me is when a man sees a woman driving a truck or sports car, they think she's sexier than one who would be driving a minivan and therefore her sex appeal goes up. Even if she had kids in the back seat it still wouldn't matter because it's very different to see a woman in a "man's car."

While watching my shows for the commercial analysis paper I noticed a huge difference between what was aired on my women's show versus my men's show. Many of the commercials aired on my women's show were advertising mini-vans or family SUVs. The men's show aired commercials for pick-up trucks and luxury cars. I also noticed that the mini-van commercials focused on family and safety while the pick-up truck or luxury car commercials focused on one's career or lifestyle.

Definitely girls might ride boys cars but guys would never drive girls car. This society has been set up these days just like this such that if a girl drives a boy car than that would eventually affect nothing, but just imagine what would people say if a guy drives a PINK car. All right forget that lets take a simple example of clothing here. Girls could wear jeans pants just like boys and that is cool , but what would happen if guys started to wear skirts like girls? would that make any sense, if girls could wear jeans pant like boys then why could boys not wear skirts like girls. That is how society has been constructed because if girls would drive boys car then it is considered as a upward movement of her, but if a boy drives a girls car then that would be a downfall movement for the guy beacause in our society the gender is not constructed as on same level, male is on first level and female is in second level

Well car commercials are definitely geared towards particular groups. Many of my friends that are girls would never drive certain cars because they are guys cars. The post was right about pick up trucks and cars with lots of horsepower. And it is definitely right about guys not driving a "girls car." In my experience, the owners for such cars like Kia, Hyundai, Saturns, VW, and audis are considered girls cars to most. Commercials you see during sporting events are those truck commercials where they do these amazing things. In truck commercials you also see construction workers or firemen, they representation of whats tough. Most minivan commercials are driven by women as well as SUV's.
