getting ready for the day
Back in the 1960's women and children were expected to always look their best no matter what they were doing that day, the photo I seleced is no different. This picture shows Kayla's mom helping her put on make-up and get ready for the day. The reason I selected this picture is because Kayla's mom may not realize it, but she is teaching her daughter that you have to look good all day every day. She is six years old and goes to kindergarden, eventually she will think that she has to look this way when going to school, mall, or just being around the house. Also, what this is doing is playing into the 1960's stereotype that I mentioned earlier "always looking her best no matter what she is doing". Everyday children just like Kayla get shuttled into these kind of stereotypes. Parents may not know it, but what they teach them has a big affect on a child's psychy. For example, like the picture i selected children are learning these types of behaviors from their parents. At this age it's starting to sink in about what the gender expectations will be for Kayla as she gets older. It is very likely that she will fall victim to following these gender expectations and be to afraid or hesistate from the "norm". What is considered to be the norm for females is looking their best at all times. If a female was to deviated from these so called "norms" then other females will critize and judge her.
