A Plastic Goal

From: Elise

Since the beginning men and women were different, it is known that they are differently anatomically, but it is evolutionary that they are different mentally. Society has engrained in us that there are essential factors to being the sex that you are born as. If something does not follow the criteria of your sex, you are pushed on the outside and labeled with a problem. Females from a young age are taught to aim for one certain look. The “look” has changed from decade to decade, but lately it has been skinny, unrealistically beautifully, and self esteem harming.
Little girls are able to learn the goals of being what society claims is beautiful at a young age. They are given an image that will always be in the back of their minds when they criticize their looks. Barbie; an unrealistically proportional body, extremely thin waist, and a face that will stay in every little girl’s mind as she grows into a woman.  By instilling such a certain look in a little girl’s mind they grow up striving for what they know as perfection.  My picture displays Barbie as the reflection seen in the mirror. Barbie in the mirror represents the image of beauty learned at a young age that is still strived for as a woman. Many women will constantly long to see that image of Barbie when they look in the mirror, or something very similar. Society markets beauty through products; makeup, perfumes, lingerie stores, and anything that will increase the feeling of feeling feminine.  The Victoria Secret “ Pink” dog, the blush, the lipstick, and perfume represent what women use to be even close to that image of perfection, what is seen in the mirror."

I like that we are looking at the picture from the same perspective that you would be looking at the mirror from. In the mirror we see Barbie, who is the ultimate symbol of the unrealistic feminine standards that our society holds women up to. In the mirror, you can see that the Barbie doll is in a box, symbolizing that women are boxed in and limited by the borders that society put around them. In this picture we look into the mirror and see Barbie instead of ourselves, which symbolizes how women become what society wants them to become, instead of being a unique individual. There is some make-up and the Victoria Secret's Pink plus dog as well. The eye shadow shows how women are encouraged to cover themselves up with makeup to create a more plastic versions of themselves. The Victoria Secret's mascot shows how our culture and popular stores endorse and reinforce these unrealistic standards for women.
