Beauty is a Beast‏

from Jessica

In my photo, I focused mainly on physical attractiveness and how it is emphasized throughout the female culture. I used various amounts of symbolism in my picture by displaying objects that women use or abuse in order to fit the standards of how women in society are viewed as beautiful. There are certain forms of dieting techniques in the trash can such as laxatives and diet pills that symbolize the extreme measures some women are willing to go through in order to be considered attractive. As the book explains, “many women are willing to endure considerable discomfort or outright pain as they strive to embody cultural ideals of beauty and femininity” (Rudman 241). There are also magazines that only show the pages that display beautiful women or ways of dieting in order to show this type of craving some women portray with having the “perfect ideal” body.
Another important element of my picture is the body language of the individual. Notice that the hand on the toilet is clearly a girls’ hand (because of the nails), and she is also kneeling down which indicates the act of throwing up and having an eating disorder. This once again displays the extremity women will go to and as the book explains, “strict cultural standards for beauty cause women to self-objectify, and failure to meet those standards creates body shame, which promotes eating disorders” (Noll & Frederickson 243).
The colors in this picture are mainly pink and purple, which is also used to reflect that this issue is mainly seen in women. The main focus of this picture is the scale and it plays an important role in describing the obsessions many women have with their weight. The contrast of this photo is also really bright which places emphasis on the objects surrounding the scale to indicate that these objects form a cycle that eventually leads women to perform drastic actions in order to harm their bodies for their own positive results and self-acceptance.

The idea that beauty is pain is very prominent in this picture. The fact that girls will go extreme measures to fit the "perfect ideal" body is very unsettling. The diet pills and laxatives symbolize that the girl has been putting more stress on her body. Whether that stress is starving herself or pushing any food she might have eaten out. The toilet symbolizes bulimia which is a serious eating disorder teenagers battle. The scale is the main focus of the picture symbolizing that weight is always on a girl's mind. No matter how they look they will always want to weigh less because that's the message the media has shown us. The media portrays the perfect woman as thin and petite so most girls believe that in order to be attractive they must be skinny. I think the quote used really helps to explain this picture and reveal how much women do go through in order to be considered "beautiful".

The main colors of the picture are pink and red, which are associated with girls. When a baby is born it is wrapped in either a blue or pink blanket, symbolizing their whether the newborn is a boy or girl. Having the girl is kneel symbolizes that she is weak and has fallen to society's pressure to fit in as an attractive woman. It is a shame how much negative input the media really has on young girls.
