Tell Me What You Want, What You Really, Really Want!

from: Mickey

I choose to use a picture from the Spice Girls concert. I got a chance to take a few pictures and this one stood out as the most obvious that represented gender socialization. I work at concerts / tour with bands and I worked the Spice Girls concert two nights in a row, in Philadelphia and in DC. I honestly can not tell the ages of girls anymore. On a few occasions while walking on the concourse, I had no idea which one of the girls was the actual mother of the group. Every single girl that is attending these concerts is dressing up just like there an actual Spice Girl. The photo I got has the story of why behind it. The image is saying, "Hey dress and look like me and all the guys will be all over you." The Spice Girl in this photo has the short tight dress, the long blonde curly hair, the high heels, tons of make-up, and long fingernails. In middle school and high school, which was the typical age group of the concert attendees, having the most girls or the most guys liking you determines your popularity status. I am not sure which Spice Girl this is, but all the male back up dancers are looking up to her like she is some type of goddess. The back up dancers all have there hands resting on there jaw like they are just dreaming of being with her and are kneeling down like they are not worthy of being in her presence. I have never seen so many young women dress like they literally just hopped off a stripper pole. After all that being said about the Spice Girls show, you do not even want me to start describing how the elementary school aged girls dressed during the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus concerts.

Perhaps you are seeing what you want to see. The woman in the photo, "Baby Spice" has short fingernails. But if it helps prop up your pre-conceived argument go for it.

I see your point. Girl's in today's society are portrayed to have this certain image of beauty. It puts a lot of pressure on young girls. They are trying to grow up to fast and look older than they really are just to fit in. It's a lot of the reason why girls have popular clicks in school to fit in.

I like this picture. I’m not going to lie; I attended the Spice Girls concert in D.C. with one of my friends I grew up with. We loved the Spice Girls when we were younger and when we heard they were going on tour, we just HAD to get tickets. I completely agree with everything you’re saying about this picture. My friend Sam and I could not stop looking around at all the younger girls, pretty much half naked, either trying to look like the Spice Girls or just trying to look good so that people (more so men) would look at them. During the concert, there were many different skits the played and it definitely showed more so, how beautiful women have such control over men. There was one part that 3 of the girls actually had 3 of the dance crew guys on leashes, walking them down the center of the stage. I couldn’t believe it. It’s showing girls that if you are gorgeous, skinny and strong, you can whip these boys into anything you want. That is not a fair society. Everyone should be treated equally and looked at by who you are on the inside.
The girls at this concert were definitely adding up to the desires of what our society has come to.

Having a Spice girl as a role model is not a gof thing, girls at that age should not have to exploit themselves in order to get attention, but thats what their role models tell them to do. I think its funny that Mickey mentions the fact that its hard to tell the ages anymore because its so true. I cant believe parents let there kids go in certain outfits. Its also a bad thing to show guys in the back ground drooling over her, In real life, girls should not want guys drooling all over them. If a guy is only nto you because of how you look, then its never going to go anywhere.
