Honesty?

from: Allison

I have made a small collage of different pictures from Comopolitan magazine that describes how young teenagers tend to act to fit into society by how the media presents older women and men. In the upper-left hand corner and bottom middle of the collage, there are a male and a female being intimate witheach other. I chose these two pictures to represent that the media is sending amessage that says, "If you look just like this, you too, can have sex." The background picture on the left side represents what a woman must look and act like to get attention from men. The woman is posed in a very dominating manner and wearing only jeans and boots, holding a cane as if to punish someone. This is showing that women must always be seductive and dominating. In the right background picture, there is a woman and a man being lifted up into the air my several friends of theirs. They are also holding alcoholic beverages in their hands. This picture sends the message that all young and beautiful people drink alcohol and people "worship" them for it. Women tend to go to the extremes to look exactly like these women in the collage at a young age, which includes dieting, under-aged drinking, and trying to have sexual activity as soon as
possible. Teenage boys look at these men in magazines and tend to think that no girl will ever be with them unless they have "6-pack" abs and "rock-hard" muscles.

I think this is an excellent example of teens and the expected image. Young girls are always encouraged to be seductive, so they will get what they want. This sends a negative message to females because those with low self esteem will become disheartened when they cant live up to the "beauty" standards. Also, this encourages men to take advantage of women because they will see them as objects instead of human beings. I think there is way more pressure on women in this society than men! This picture definetly sends that message.

I think this student did an excellent job with this project! She demonstrated exactly what teens see day in and day out. When I think of what ever influenced me to dress the way I do, or look the way I do, or act the way I do...I never think it's from advertisments, but it's possible. I think it's important that she included all different parts of what a teen is interested in, like alcohol and sex, or being with friends or being with a boy or girl. These ads are in magazines all over, and usually the picture is irrelevant to what theyre actually trying to sell.

This project is a very accurate dipiction of what you see in fashion magazines and the article def. portrays what woman think when they see the pictures or even read what the article has to "offer" a woman. Teen magazines and even women's magazines in general portray a strong idea of how women should act, wear their makeup, dress, who they should hang out with, etc. Therefore when women see this they think that they have to strive to be something they are not instead of seeing themselves for them and accepting of their own beauty whether it be inside or out. Honestly how many times have you heard a woman say "I wish I could look like that" or "Why can't my skin be perfect like hers". Average, everyday women don't realize that the women they see on the pages are not natural...So many alternations have been made in order for them to appear as flawless as they do. It a shame that women have to loose self esteem over a photo that is 75% false.

this is a really creative photo. The photo has females dressed in clothing that exposes their bodies to a large extent, this portrays what society thinks of femamles as sexualy appealing.
