Should women have to view an ultrasound before getting an abortion?
Check out this post from feministing. Ann thinks a requirement for women to view ultrasounds in order to get an abortion is insulting. What do you think?

This is a free country and every one should have right to choose what is best for them. Every one has right of live, liberty and property. But why would you tell someone to see what you are going to kill? I quite did not understand why the legislature wanted to pass this bill, but there is a probablity that may be the government wants to encourage women NOT to do abotion;by letting them see that unborn baby inside them and see their innocence. May be then the women would stop at the last moment. Well i think I am just been a radical but still it could be a hard way to learn to induce women not to do abortion. But still if I am wrong about my own opinion then yes letting the woman have an ultra sound before getting abortion is not only insult, it is looking down on them. When woman has already decided that she would not want that unborn baby to come to this world, then that should be it. That would be her choice and she has full right on it.
It's a waste of money and time and it's insulting. Women know what an abortion entails, it seems like a form of emotional blackmail and anti-abortion propaganda.
It's wrong and they know it! It's only to make the women feel horrible or think second thoughts. Yeah they say that abortion is not against the law but is it really? Someone who is getting the abortion knows what is going to happen to them, and the baby, so why put a women through the stress of wondering what if they don't get the abortion.
Although I am personally against abortions, it is not my place to decide this for another woman. I think that this requirement is horrendous. Making the decision to have an abortion in itself is probably one of the hardest choices that these women have to make. To force them to view the image of a baby they are ultimately about to give up is sickening. The law was simply made to degrade and make these women feel worse about their decision. I do however think that the option should be there for the women to choose. Some women may be on the fence about what they want to do, and having that option there may help them in their deciding. If they decide they want to see, then fine, but they should not be force. It is especially disheartening for the victims of rape and/or incest. These innocent victims have already been subject to enough truama as is.
Though I do not believe in abortions, I think that women should have the right to choose. It is not up to the government (a system made up of mostly males) to tell a woman or man for that matter, what they can and cannot do with their body – the body being a self-governed possession given rights by the natural rights of life, liberty and property. The fact that the Oklahoma legislation is mandating that a woman must have an ultrasound previous to her abortion is ridiculous. The reason women have abortions is because their pregnancy is unwanted, whether from rape or any other incident and to subjecting a woman to an ultrasound that forces her to watch images of her child before termination is horrifying. The choice to terminate a pregnancy is difficult enough, but adding an ultrasound makes it unbearable. Maybe this is a ploy to make women contemplating abortion re-think and analyze their decision more thoroughly, but it’s just unnecessary and insulting. I would rather have a child's life spared through abortion, than have them grow up in a household that is unfit and ill-equipped to raise them properly.
I am torn between if it is right or not. Coming from a medical standpoint, I think they should do an ultrasound because they should make sure that the patient is not past 23 weeks. I say this because after 23 weeks of gestation it is illegal in most staes to do an abortion. But, in most cases the patient is earlier in their pregnancy. Now, I believe that it is wrong in a way because it is insulting to the patient. They know what they are getting into and already has made a decsion on what they want to do. By doing an ultrasound may just amke them feel even worse. Why put someone through more pain?
This is suppose to be a free country. No one should make it a law that women, have to have a ultrasound before getting an abortion. Dam it is our body and we should be able to do what we want with it. If a woman wants to get an abortion, then no body should try to change her mind. As to the ultrasound, there must be other ways to find out how far into the pregnancy the women is, but a ultrasound, give me a break. If I was going to have an abortion, I would have want to see the fetus on the monitor, and I am sure other women feel the same way. I do not believe in abortions, but sometimes it is necessary.
The first thought that comes to mind is "wow". Not only is that bill insulting but its something that would give way to psychological issues post-abortion. It is insulting for the most obvious reasons. Clearly when a woman decides to have an abortion it is something she knows that she cannot reverse. Of course she has thought of both the positives and negatives of having the baby as well as positives and negatives of having an abortion. Its not like those who decide to get an abortion wake up one morning and just do it. It is something that i can imagine has alot of thought that goes into it both mentally and emotionally. ALSO, i feel that this bill would make an already tough decision even harder. I personally have never seen someone after they have just had an abortion but i assume based on media portrayal that it is great challenge emotionally, so to sit there and force someone to have to see the baby before they undergo the procedure,is ludicrous, its almost a form of torture. And i feel that that can incur great psychological issues within the patient. And if these aren't enough, they want to force the patient to pay for a service that they don't even want. Its really crazy...
The only person who should be able to decide is the women, the women pregnant. We do not know the reasons for abortion and we do not have the right to force women to seeing an ultrasound. This seems like a way to encourage women to rethink what they are about to do and continue with the pregnancy. I do think women should have all the facts before having an abortion, but not be forced into an ultrasound. Facts should be presented in an unbiased fashion and support both sides of abortion. However, like i said before, the pregnant women is the one who should chose to have an abortion, no one else should be influencing her.
I think Anne is right, it is insulting. It should not be required for women to view ultrasounds before getting an abortion. I don't even know why they would consider this as an option. By showing women an ultrasound before they have an abortion, they are obviously trying to convince them not to have an abortion. Women get abortions for a reason; because they don't have enough money, they're too young, etc. They should have the choice, it's their body and their life. This is as bad as using fear tactics to convince people not to have sex.
This is truly brilliant! I love who ever thought to do this. Although it seems everyone who has posted a comment thus far thinks it's insulting but I must disagree. I'm so tired of hearing the word CHOICE. Did you not have a choice to use a birth control pill or a condom? And did you not have the choice to have sex in the first place? I saw a movie called "Juno" where a teen goes to an abortion clinic but a protester is standing outside and tells Juno that her baby has finger nails. Juno runs out of the clinic and ops for adoption. Perhaps if a women saw what was really going on in her body, the heart beat, etc., abortion would not be taken so lightly. As far as them making women also pay for the ultrasound, that seems reasonable seeing as how they were clearly going to pay $300-$400 for an abortion. This is a great idea.
I cannot believe this new bill. It’s an outrage to require an ultra sound for women before a abortion. Many women who get an abortion already have a lot of stress on them by seeing the ultrasound will make you deal with so much more. I believe that it is a free country and women should be able to make the decision whether they want to have an ultrasound done. It is a scandal by requiring this ultrasound because the price of abortion plus ultrasound it is designed to keep the young and the poor away. More and More women won’t be able to afford this so there will be less abortion which is the exact reason for making this new bill.
I think this is extremely uncalled for considering most women in that position would not like that reminder, its the pro-life side's way for rubbing it in the face of someone that is simply exercising their rights as an American citizen.
no....thats ridiculous. Women should have the right to do whatever they want with there bodies becasue this countryy was founded on one principle....choice. To be able to choose what you do and live the way you want, as long as you dont break the law of course. You know, abortion being illegal would be an ok concept if it wasnt based on the fact that its religious right wing people who want to force the law based on their own personal beliefs. You see thats why the original settlers left England, because people above them were making decisions that the public didnt agree with based on what they believed was right. Hello....by making abortion illegal is breaking down the structure of what this country was based on. Its just more republican propaganda to keep the religious movement going strong.
No. If a wants an abortion she should be able to get it without having to look at the fetus. It is more emotional baggage and the law is being used as a guilt trip to have women not get an abortion.

Yes, Yes, Yes. They need to realize they are killing an innocent baby!
